What the division does

The Consumer Response team hears directly from consumers about the challenges they experience in the financial products and services marketplace. We bring consumer concerns to the attention of financial institutions, including banks, mortgage companies, student loan servicing firms and others, and to address consumer complaints.

Three tactics drive the CFPB’s approach to consumer response:

  • Apply knowledge of consumer financial protection regulations to consumer complaints.
  • Assess the merits of complex consumer complaints, perform case analyses, and identify and report significant trends in consumer complaints.
  • Lead others in case analyses and research into consumer financial protection regulations.

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act streamlined consumer protection oversight authority in the CFPB – promoting greater efficiency and accountability of financial institutions for American consumers.

The Consumer Response team works directly with consumers, financial institutions, and other stakeholders, collecting information and performing analyses that serve as an early warning sign for the Bureau and the consumer finance markets as a whole.
