Every day nearly 100 Americans die by suicide, and even higher is the number of people who contemplate suicide. A study released this year by SAMHSA found that 8.6 million American adults experienced serious thoughts of suicide within the past 12 months. Among children ages 14-18, 2.9 million had serious thoughts of suicide.
Suicide is a public health issue that touches the lives of millions of people across the nation, and each of us has a role to play in preventing it in our own communities.

The SAMHSA team supporting Project Evolve has been working hard over the past few months to make improvements to the website. Many of these improvements are still “behind-the-scenes,” but enhancements are underway to both the technical infrastructure underpinning the site and to how the information is organized and presented.

A new report released by SAMHSA today shows that the national weighted average rate of illegal tobacco sales to youth is 8.5 percent, the lowest rate reported since the inception of the Synar program. The Synar program requires States to enact and enforce laws restricting the sale of tobacco products to youth. The report also shows that the number of States reporting low rates of illegal tobacco sales to youth has increased.
