The Laredo Sector Carrizo Cane Removal and Control Pilot Project is the first effort by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to remove and control Carrizo cane along the Rio Grande River. Because it is our first attempt, CBP is using this project to identify the pros and cons of different methods for cane removal. The first phase of the pilot project is located along a 1.1 mile stretch of the Rio Grande River on approximately 27 acres of city owned land between Laredo’s international railroad bridge and the south wall of the Laredo Community College. The project extends roughly 200 feet from the river bank, inland to an existing patrol road used by Border Patrol for which it has a 25 year easement. This area was chosen because it poses the most significant challenge to the Laredo Border Patrol Sector. There are currently no other CBP cane removal projects in progress for any other portion within the land covered by the Environmental Assessment or elsewhere on the Rio Grande.
