U.S. Customs and Border Protection employees from the El Paso Field Office, the El Paso Border Patrol Sector, the El Paso Air and Marine Branch, Assistant Chief Counsel, Office of Public Affairs, and others gathered for a local observance of Family Heritage Month on August 23, 2012. The program celebrated the heritage of the American family and facilitated understanding of the multi-cultural perspectives in CBP. The theme of the event was “People Our Most Valuable Resource.”

Assistant Chief Council Christopher Ryan moderated a panel discussion during which four local employees took turns discussing their background, family traditions and heritage. The panelists included Lordsburg Patrol Agent in Charge Christopher Mangusing, Supervisory Mission Support Specialist Leticia Galaviz, Mission Support Specialist Rosie Villanueva, and Deputy Assistant Chief Counsel Mark Hannig.

The stories presented by the four were similar at times. All discussed the sacrifices their parents made to help their children became successful and productive members of the community. All stressed the work ethic instilled by their parents as being important in their day-to-day activities at CBP. At times the stories were humorous striking a familiar chord and bringing a chuckle to members of the audience. Deeply personal reflections about the importance of family and loved ones now gone brought tears to some panelists and members of the audience as well.

The Mistress of Ceremonies was DCR Specialist Katrina Phillips. CBP Officer Willie Campbell began the program with an acapella performance of the national anthem. Opening remarks were delivered by DCR Field Director Kristy Montes. Closing remarks were presented by DCR Officer Norma Martinez.
