Message from DCR Executive Director: CBP Honors Polish American Heritage Month, National Italian American Heritage Month and German American Day 2012
(Friday, September 28, 2012)
October is a time to celebrate the cultures of Polish Americans, German Americans and Italian Americans. CBP observes the month beginning in Northern Europe with Polish American Heritage Month. The first Polish American Heritage month was celebrated in 1981 in the state of Pennsylvania. Michael Blichasz, a fourth generation Polish American, started the celebration in an effort to bring to the forefront the strong pride of Polish Americans. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October as Polish American Heritage Month.Moving southwest to neighboring country Germany, CBP celebrates October 6 as German American Day. It was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, as it is an ethnic holiday that affords German Americans an opportunity to recall their history, contributions and achievements. Some notable German Americans include Milton Hershey, Albert Einstein and Dwight D. Eisenhower to name a few.To the south we find Italy as CBP celebrates National Italian American Heritage Month. Every year, the President of the United States signs an executive order in recognition of the many achievements and contributions made to the American culture by persons of Italian Heritage.CBP employees are encouraged to participate in the Polish American, Italian American and German American Day activities and programs at the sectors and ports of entry throughout the nation.
