2008 Dress Rehearsal

Census Bureau Hires Managers in New Stockton Office — A management staff has been hired for a Local Census Office in Stockton, Calif., which will be the hub of local census activity for the 2008 Census Dress Rehearsal. About 2,000 hires will be made for census work in San Joaquin County. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-February.)

Census Bureau Hires Managers in New Fayetteville Office — A management staff has been hired for a Local Census Office in Fayetteville, N.C., which will be the hub of local census activity for the 2008 Census Dress Rehearsal. About 3,000 hires will be made for census work in a nine-county region in that part of the state. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-February.)

American Community Survey

The American Community: 2004 — Separate reports present portraits of the Hispanic, Asian and black populations in the United States, providing information on a number of characteristics (education, household type, income, commuting, etc.) based on data from the 2004 American Community Survey. Data are presented at the national level for selected ethnic and racial groups with populations of 250,000 or more (e.g., Guatemalans, Hondurans, etc.) in tables, charts and maps. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-February.)

Demographics Surveys

Current Population Survey Data Collection — In February, Census Bureau field representatives will begin interviewing about 100,000 randomly selected households nationwide for the Current Population Survey's update of employment data. They will also be collecting data on topics such as income, health insurance coverage, educational attainment and living arrangements. Results will be available this year. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-February.)

Extended Measures of Well-Being: Living Conditions in the United States, 2003 — National measures from the Survey of Income and Program Participation covering five broad domains, including possession of appliances and electronic goods, such as cellular telephones; housing conditions; neighborhoods and community services; ability to pay bills and buy groceries; and expectations of getting help from friends, families and communities. (Tentatively scheduled for mid-February.)

2006 Annual Survey of State and Local Government Employment and Payroll — Annual estimates on how many people are employed by state and local governments — from state-owned alcoholic beverage stores to law enforcement officers to higher education — and the payroll of these governments. Summary data are provided for each state. (Tentatively scheduled for release early February.)

Facts for Features

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month (May) — We celebrate the contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans to our nation with statistical information on this group. Included is a separate set of statistics for Asians and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders covering demographics and businesses. (Tentatively scheduled for release March 1.)

Older Americans Month (May) — We celebrate the contributions of our nation's older citizens with a set of data on the demographic characteristics of the population 65 and older. (Tentatively scheduled for release March 1.)

2005 Service Annual Survey: Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services — Jan. 29 —Architectural firms collected more than $6 billion in revenues for residential building projects in 2005, up 27 percent from 2004. Internet address:

2005 Service Annual Survey: Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation — Jan. 29 — The American gambling industry raked in more than $28 billion in revenue in 2005. This was a 9 percent increase over 2004 and roughly twice the revenue earned by professional sports teams for 2005. Internet address:

2005 Service Annual Survey: Other Services (except public administration) — Jan. 29 — Americans are putting more money into their health and appearance, as well as into their pets. Nail salons collected $1.7 billion from clients in 2005, while diet and weight reducing centers earned $2.8 billion. These were some of the largest increases among the personal service sectors at 28.8 and 16 percent, respectively. Additionally, pet care services (excluding veterinary services) increased 15.3 percent over 2004, with total estimated revenue of $1.9 billion. Internet address:
