Population Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa: Demographic Dimensions 2006 — The report focuses on the projected changes in the older population between 2006 and 2030 for 42 African countries south of the Sahara Desert with total populations of 1 million or more. It highlights the demographic aspects of aging in these countries, with a special section examining the impact of HIV/AIDS on population aging. (Tentatively scheduled for release Aug. 20.)

Income, Poverty, Health Insurance Coverage and American Community Survey: 2006 — On Aug. 28, the Census Bureau will hold a news conference to release the consolidated report on 2006 income, poverty and health insurance coverage for the nation, based on the Current Population Survey. American Community Survey income and poverty tabulations pertaining to states and areas with 65,000 or more residents will be released simultaneously on the Internet.

Profiles of Older Workers — The Census Bureau, in partnership with 31 states, has launched a series of reports on workers 55 and older. Vermont is the third state to be released in the series, followed by Indiana, Arkansas and Hawaii. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late Aug.)

Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2005 — This report shows national-level trends of child-support income received by parents for children whose other parent lives elsewhere. It also examines other types of support received for the children, such as health insurance and noncash assistance. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early Sept.)

Reasons People Do Not Work: 2004 — People 15 or older list reasons they had not worked at a paid job for at least the prior four consecutive months, according to the national Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early Sept.)

State and County Housing Unit Estimates: July 1, 2006 — Last year, Florida had four counties in the top 10 with the fastest housing gains in the nation. Updated estimates of the nation’s housing stock at the national, state and county levels for 2006 will show whether this pattern continues. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early Sept.)

Health and Health Care of the Older Population in Urban and Rural China: 2000 — An examination of activity limitations, self-assessed health, chronic disease status and lifestyle behaviors of China’s older population. Also looks at the mental health and utilization of health care services by Chinese 60 and older. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early September.)

Population of Hurricane-Affected Areas — The Census Bureau will issue population estimates and maps of areas that could be impacted by the next named storm or hurricane that threatens landfall on U.S. soil.

Facts for Features

Halloween (Oct. 31) — The Census Bureau presents statistics from demographic and economic subject areas on this spookiest of nights, when the young and young-at-heart don scary disguises or ones that may bring a smile as they go door to door for tricks or treats. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late Aug. Facts for Features are released twice: the first time about two months before the event, then resent about two weeks before the event.)

American Community Survey Webinar — Aug. 15 — This Internet seminar gives an overview of what will be available in this year’s release of American Community Survey data and some of the differences from last year. The webinar will be available on the Census Bureau’s Web site at <http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/american_community_survey_acs/newsmediakit.html> on Aug. 20.

Estimates of County Population by Age, Sex, Race and Hispanic Origin: July 1, 2006 — Aug. 9 — Nearly one in every 10 of the nation’s 3,141 counties has a population that is more than 50 percent minority. Internet address: <http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/population/cb07-113.html>.

Census Launches Business.census.gov — Aug. 8 — The Census Bureau has launched a new Web site – business.census.gov – to help businesses understand the economic census and how it benefits them. The economic census is conducted every five years, and more than 4 million businesses will get forms this year for the 2007 Economic Census. (Online now at <http://business.census.gov>.).
