 CBP Commissioner Bersin Hosts Second Meeting of 12th Term Trade Advisory Committee in Long Beach

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan D. Bersin opened the 12th term Commercial Operations Advisory Committee’s (COAC) second meeting held in Long Beach, CA on August 18. This committee of 20 representatives from the trade industry advises the Secretaries of the Department of Homeland Security and Department of the Treasury about the commercial operations of Customs and Border Protection and related DHS functions. Commissioner Bersin co-chaired the event with Timothy Skud, the deputy assistant secretary of tax, trade, and tariff policy for the U.S. Department of Treasury. Mr. Bersin expressed that the trade process and supply chain security are one in the same; both are tied to economic prosperity. He stressed the importance of economic competitiveness in America. He also emphasized that partnerships with other countries, governmental agencies and the trade community are essential for further success in moving forward.After the Commissioner’s opening remarks and the introduction of the 12th term members, management by account pilot programs Center of Excellence and Expertise (CEE) and Account Executive were reviewed and discussed. The latter will likely become part of the CEE, effective October 1.Other topics on the agenda included simplified entry and processing, the role of the broker revision project and updates on the work of subcommittees of the land border security initiatives, air cargo security, automated commercial environment (ACE), one U.S. government at the border, anti-dumping/countervailing duty and IPR enforcement. Best practices, insights learned, noteworthy results, and streamlining processes were shared.
