(09/13/2012)
Two CBP employees were named 2012 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medalists in the Homeland Security category today by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service to celebrate excellence in federal civil service. They will be presented their awards this evening at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Office of Information Technology Program Manager Nael Samha and Office of Field Operations Program Manager Thomas Roland, Jr. were recognized for creating a smartphone application that allows CBP officers and agents in the field to access law enforcement databases in real time, which has led to enforcement actions against more than 450 drug traffickers, weapons smugglers, illegal aliens and potential terror suspects since March 2010.

President Obama said that Service to America Medal recipients "exemplify the spirit of service that marks our federal workforce," and provide a reminder that "the collective efforts of dedicated civil servants lay the foundation for America's prosperity and ensure a brighter future for our children."
