Automated Processing for VWP Applicants

(03/31/2011)
The Arrival-Departure Record, CBP Form I-94W (green form), is no longer required for nonimmigrant visitors traveling under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) by air or sea and who have obtained a travel authorization via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). During Summer 2010, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) transitioned to automated processing for VWP travelers with ESTAs making the use of Form I-94W unnecessary in the air and sea environments. It is important to note that CBP Form I-94W will continue to be required at land borders and at some sea ports of entry. If admitted with the automated process at a port of entry, the CBP officer will stamp the applicant’s passport with a U.S. admission stamp and annotate the passport with the class of admission “WT/WB” and the date admitted until. Travelers’ departures from the United States are documented electronically.

VWP nationals traveling to the United States under the VWP are exempt nonimmigrant visa requirements, but are required to obtain travel authorization via ESTA prior to boarding air and sea carriers. Specific instructions regarding U.S. visa and passport requirements and requirements for travel under the VWP may be found at the U.S. Department of State website and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website, DHS. Travel agents and air carrier and cruise vessel companies are also valuable resources for information on travel requirements. ( U.S. Department of State Website ) ( U.S. Department of Homeland Security Website )

If a paper CBP Form I-94W is required, CBP processing requires a CBP officer to stamp the arrival and departure portions of the completed Form I-94W, the passport and CBP Declaration, Form 6509B. CBP retains the arrival portion of the Form I-94W and returns the departure portion of the Form I-94W and passport to the applicant. The departure portion of the Form I-94W and passport is to be in the applicant’s possession at all times until the applicant departs the United States.

If you return home and find you still have an I-94W form in your passport, follow the instructions at CBP Info Center. ( CBP Info Center )
