New Training Course Offered on Accessible Public Rights-of-Way March 11, 2004
 

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), in cooperation with Easter Seals Project ACTION, is offering a course on the design of accessible pedestrian facilities in public rights-of-way at an upcoming conference. The course is designed to provide a better understanding of the access considerations for persons with disabilities and ways to effectively address them within the overall intersection design process. The material covered will address both the design of new locations and the retrofitting of existing facilities. The course, "Designing Accessible Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Rights-of-Way," is based on recommendations prepared by an Access Board advisory committee upon which new guidelines for public rights-of-way are being developed under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Topics covered include:

• Identifying the many types of access considerations for pedestrians with disabilities
• Effectively responding to the latestADA requirements in the design and operation of attractive pedestrian facilities
• Applying current ADA design criteria in the design and operation of pedestrian facilities within the publicrights-of-way
• Developing capital programs sensitive to the prioritization of accessibility projects
• Understanding horizontal and vertical design considerations in the design and construction of sidewalks, curb ramps, and pedestrian crossings
• Specifying hardware types and placement considerations for accessible pedestrian signals
• Working with a realcase study for future design applications of all of the above
