Assessment and Screening of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Contemporary Methods

A webinar in Partnership with Military Pathways*

September 16, 2010; 1400 EST

Featured Speaker: Terence M. Keane, Ph.D.
US National Center for PTSD
VA Boston Health Care System
Boston University School of Medicine

Description: This program is designed for practitioners working with patients who have been exposed to life-threatening or traumatic events and who develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is one of the most prevalent of all psychological disorders and is being more readily recognized in clinical practices worldwide. With the large numbers of Americans, now numbering 2 million, involved in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, the use of appropriate assessment and screening approaches is critical. Participants will learn contemporary methods for assessing patients with PTSD and will also learn current models for screening for PTSD in primary care, mental health, and substance abuse clinics. Forensic assessment strategies will be considered in the context of teaching about diagnostics and evaluation. Specific measures will be included in this workshop and will incorporate structured diagnostic measures (i.e., the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale-CAPS), self report measures (i.e., the PTSD Checklist, the Mississippi Scale, and the PK Scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory: MMPI-II), and various trauma screens with strong sensitivity, specificity, and overall reliability.

Is Telemental Health as Good as Face-to-Face Care?

Novel Aspects of Evaluating Equivalence for Post Traumatic Stress

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent mental health problem found among returning Veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These returning military personnel often live in rural areas and have limited access to care and specialized psychological treatments. Telemental health (TMH) technology has introduced a potential solution to the persistent problem of access to care in remote areas. Many randomized clinical trials have compared telemental health to in-person care. To date, however, none have focused on whether telemental health is as good as face-to-face care..

Principle Investigator, Leslie Morland, Psy.D. from the National Center for PTSD, Pacific Islands Division in Honolulu, will describe the novel design, methods, and rationale of two randomized clinical trials of TMH that use non-inferiority design. The first trial evaluates the delivery of Anger Management Training using video-teleconference (VTC). The second four year trial will evaluate the delivery of Cognitive Processing Therapy by VTC. Join us as we evaluate equivalence of telemental health care delivery.
