The Federal Reserve serves as a fiscal and depository agent for the United States government. The Federal Reserve services United States Savings Bonds and Treasury Marketable Securities on behalf of the Bureau of the Public Debt.

Savings Bonds

Savings bonds, both paper and electronic, are investments backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. They are non-marketable securities, meaning that they cannot be sold by one investor to another. You can purchase electronic bonds through Treasury Direct.

Treasury Marketable Securities

Treasury Marketable Securities consist of Treasury Bills, Treasury Notes, Treasury Bonds, and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), which can be traded on the secondary market. Treasury Marketable Securities can be purchased in increments of $100 through Treasury Direct.
