First joint WEU/NATO crisis management exercise - CMX/CRISEX 2000 -
to be held from 17 to 23 February 2000

WEU and NATO will conduct the first ever joint WEU/NATO crisis management exercise, CMX/CRISEX 2000, from 17 to 23 February 2000 to give substance to the development of European Security and Defence Identity (ESDI) within the Alliance.

This joint WEU/ NATO exercise is based on a Petersberg mission scenario (peace support mission) leading to a WEU-led operation making use of NATO assets and capabilities. It will demonstrate the culture of close co-operation developed between the two organisations.

The aim is to test WEU and appropriate NATO crisis management mechanisms and procedures as well as the consultation arrangements between WEU and NATO, including the interaction between each organisation's headquarters and WEU/NATO nations.

The exercise will be conducted in WEU and NATO Headquarters, in NATO Strategic Commands (SHAPE and SACLANT), and in national capitals. No troops will actually be deployed.

All 30 WEU and NATO nations have been invited to take part in CMX/CRISEX 2000.

For further information, please contact Ms. Myriam Sochacki at the WEU (+ 32 2 500 44 55) or Mr. Lee McClenny at NATO (+ 32 2 707 50 41 or 50 35).
