    Food Safety Conference

    Sharing an understanding of Food Safety Regulatory Systems

    On September 20-22, 2010, OIP’s Middle East and North Africa Office (MENA) hosted a Food Safety Conference in Cairo for more than 100 participants. The objectives of the conference were to:

    • • Present the components of the U.S. food safety system.
    • • Focus on the foundation of science-based food safety systems and risk assessment.
    • • Present examples of successful industry-regulator partnership to ensure food safety.
    • • Share and exchange experiences with regulators from the Middle East and North Africa on successes and challenges in establishing their food safety systems.

    Dr. Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the U.S. FDA, gave welcoming remarks via video followed by the U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. Representatives of the Egyptian Government were H.E. Minister Abaza of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Dr. Naser Alsayed, Deputy Minister of Health, and Counselor Saied El- Alfi, Chairman of Consumer Protection Agency within the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Layla Batarseh, Director of MENA Office gave the key note address in Arabic. Along with the United States, there were representatives from nine MENA countries.
