Hurricane Rafael is moving over the North Atlantic Ocean, centered at midday about 545 miles south-southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Maximum sustained winds are 75 mph, a Category One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Rafael is forecast to lose its tropical characteristics later today. However, it will remain a powerful extratropical low over the North Atlantic for several days. Rafael is moving toward the north-northeast at 35 mph, and a turn toward the northeast at a faster forward speed is expected later today.
