Safe and Supportive Schools Grantees

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Education awarded $38.8 million in Safe and Supportive School (S3) grants to 11 states to measure school safety at the building level and to provide federal funds for interventions in those schools with the greatest needs. The ultimate goal of the grants is to create and support safe and drug-free learning environments, and increase academic success for students in these high-risk schools.

Funds may be used by state education agencies to develop measurement systems that will enable them to assess conditions for learning within individual schools, including school safety, and to make this information publicly available. Using this data, states will work in collaboration with participating local educational agencies to improve the learning environment within schools facing the biggest challenges.

The grants are housed within the Office of Safe and Healthy Students, which supports efforts to create safe schools, respond to crises, prevent drug and alcohol abuse, ensure the health and well being of students, and teach students good citizenship and character. The office also coordinates the Department’s efforts in these areas with other federal agencies.

School Climate Survey Compendium (as of December 20, 2011)

To assist educators and education agencies in locating a valid and reliable needs assessment that suits their needs, the Safe and Supportive Schools Technical Assistance Center is developing a compendium of student, staff, and family surveys that can be used as part of a school climate needs assessment.
