Performer Biographies

Formed in 1989 by four young musicians from the Curtis Institute of Music, the Borromeo String Quartet has performed in the world’s illustrious concert halls including the Berlin Philharmonie, Tokyo’s Casals Hall, the Concertgebouw, Opera Bastille, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Library of Congress. In 2000 the Quartet completed two seasons as a member of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two. The Quartet conducts an annual string quartet seminar at Dai-Ichi Semei Hall in Tokyo, and continues its residencies at the Taos Summer School of Music, the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum, and the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, where first violinist Nicholas Kitchen serves as artistic director. The Borromeo served as ensemble-in-residence for the 1998-99 season of NPR's Performance Today. In 2003 the Borromeo introduced the Living Archive Recorded Performance Series, making it possible to order DVDs and CDs of most of its concerts around the world.

Winner of the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in 2005, Parker String Quartet has performed in several series including Ravinia Festival’s Rising Starts Series, Schneider Concerts Series at the New School, and Concert Artists Guild’s New Works Series. In addition the group has toured in Europe as part of their Bordeaux Competition award. Outside the concert hall, the Parker String Quartet has brought music to new ears in non-traditional spaces. Its performances in bars and clubs all over the East Coast have been featured in Time Out NY, Boston Globe, Chamber Music Magazine and Musical America.com. In fall 2007, the group became the first ever string quartet in residence at Barbes Bar and Performance Space in Brooklyn, collaborating with artists of other musical genres including jazz, folk, and world music. The Parker Quartet was recently selected for the Professional String Quartet Training Program at the New England Conservatory, where the group was founded.

Formed in 2005, the Nova Quartet has performed in the Schlesinger Concert Hall, First Night Alexandria, George Mason University, Harmon Center for the Arts and Fairfax Old Town Hall. All are members of the of the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras top-tier: Brian Hong (8th grade, Robinson Secondary School; Marissa Resmini (7th grade, South County Middle/High School); Kelsey Johnson, 10th grade, Thomas Jefferson School for Science and Technology); Alex Glaubitz, J.E.B. Stuart High School (10th grade)

The New England Conservatory Preparatory School is known as one of the best of its kind in the nation, emphasizing serious, professional training for the pre-college student. Many of the NEC Preparatory School’s performing ensembles offer not only end of semester performances, but also outside musical collaborations, tours, and special engagements, including the Preparatory School Contemporary Festival, Music Celebration Day, and the WCRB Cartoon Festival Open House. About 50 student chamber ensembles are formed every semester, coached by distinguished faculty. Each year the Borromeo String Quartet hosts a guest artist competition and the winners play a concert with the Borromeos in Jordan Hall. The members of today’s NEC quartet are students in the advanced chamber music program.
