NSTA 2012 Supporting English Learners in Science: Strategies for Success

This one-day workshop featured classroom practitioners sharing effective science instructional practices for English Learners (ELs). A major challenge for ELs in mastering science content is acquisition of the academic language reflected in science texts and other science instructional materials. This workshop is geared toward middle- and high school science teachers seeking to learn techniques for teaching inclusive lessons for English Learners, as well as administrators wishing to share this information with their teachers.
NABE 2012 Indigenous Bilingual Education Pre-conference Institute
“Linking the past with the future: Using heritage languages and cultures to promote academic English proficiency for success in school, higher education, and careers." The purpose of the Title III Native American and Alaska Native Children in School program (NAM) is to provide grants for eligible entities to develop high levels of academic attainment in English among English learners (ELs) and to promote parental and community participation in language instruction educational programs. NAM priorities for new grants funded in FY 2011 are: Increasing Postsecondary Success; Enabling More Data-based Decision-Making; Parental Involvement to Improve School Readiness and Success; and Supporting Native American Language Instruction.

Native American and Alaska Native Children in Schools Grant Program Directors Meeting
The Native American and Alaska Native Children in Schools Grant Program Directors meeting, sponsored by the Office of English Language Acquisition, was held September 30, 2011, at the U.S. Department of Education Headquarters in Washington, DC. The event brought together all 22 grantees to hear discussions on the following topics: annual performance reports, data collection, grant management, and the newly created virtual Community of Practice launched in September 2011. It also provided an opportunity for grantees to meet and interact with their counterparts from all over the country.
High-Quality STEM Education for English Learners: Current Challenges and Effective Practices
On July 11, 2011, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for English Language Acquisition (OELA) hosted an forum on educating English learners in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Dr. Okhee Lee (University of Miami) and José Franco (WestEd) facilitated the meeting.
Improving Education for English Learners with Special Needs: Promising Practices and Current Challenges
The U.S. Department of Education's Office for English Language Acquisition (OELA), in conjunction with the Council for Great City Schools, hosted a forum on English learners with special needs on May 18, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
2011 National Conversations on English Learner Education
In the spring of 2011, a series of 6 regional meetings entitled the National Conversations on English Learner Education was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), in partnership with the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), the Office for Civil Rights, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
