Born into a family of professional executioners, Reichhart executed about 3,000 people in Germany during his career, which began in 1924. Fecal Transplants Cure Clostridium difficile

Clostridium difficile is one of hundreds of species of bacteria normally living in the human intestinal tract, but when the other species are wiped out, it can overwhelm the gut, causing severe diarrhea and even death. C. difficile is difficult to cure, as the very thing that often creates the problem—antibiotics—is also the standard treatment. Fecal transplants may hold the key to restoring bacterial balance. Researchers hope to eliminate the "ick factor," as well as the risk of transmitting infections, by identifying which fecal bacteria are needed to clear up C. difficile and then growing them in a lab instead of using actual fecal matter.
