American Family History and Folklife Online Resource

Many of the most dearly held traditions among Americans of all backgrounds are maintained within the family.  People are increasingly interested in studying their family history, and in researching their family’s folk traditions.  The goal of this online presentation, created by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, is to encourage and assist American families in carrying out this important and rewarding research.

The American Family History and Folklife Online Resource includes a brief introductory essay on family history and folklife research. After this introduction, it provides links to resources in several categories, all of which can help with planning and executing projects. These include fieldwork guides that can help you plan and record interviews, conservation and preservation sites that can help you work with documents and artifacts, organizations that can provide resources and support, and references for further study. In addition, the American Family History and Folklife Online Resource maintains a list of links to collections at the American Folklife Center that contain significant documentation of family history and traditions. We hope these collections can serve as examples in your own work.
