Forty-nine 12-inch discs, 26 10-inch discs, and 1 6-inch disc of music recorded in Panama, by Myron Schaeffer, 1943-1945. The collection includes a song list for AFS 7653-7697 (data sheets from the Instituto de Investigaciones Folkloricas, Archivo de la Discoteca, Universidad Interamericana, Panama). Texts for some of the songs are transcribed in an article by Louise Cramer entitled "Songs of West Indian Negroes in the Canal Zone," California Folklore Quarterly V, no. 3 (July 1946): 243-272. AFC 1950/026: Per Host Wire Recordings of Cuna Indians from San Blas Islands, Panama
Four wire spools of field recordings of a lullaby from the San Blas Islands, Panama, sung by an Indian girl; conversations with missionary Lonnie Iglesias, a San Blas Indian who was educated in the United States; a chief making a speech; chants used in traditional medicine and customs; flute music played on reed panpipes; songs; conversations between the missionary and children; the missionary giving some information on the language of the San Blas Indians; speech; and chant. The collection includes 3 black-and-white photographic prints of musicians playing reed panpipes taken by Per Höst. Recorded by Per Höst in April and May 1948 at Ailigande and possibly other locations in the San Blas Islands, Panama.
