The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. The NSF Act of 1950 (Public Law 81-507) sets forth our mission: "To promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity and welfare; and to secure the national defense."
