the Tarih-i Hind-i garbi
The people of the Middle East were as eager to learn of the peoples and places the West as the West was to learn more about them. In 1732, the Tarih-i Hind-i garbi (The history of the discovery of America) was published in Istanbul by Ibrahim Müteferrika. It has the distinction of being both the first illustrated book and the first book about America published by Muslims in the Near East. Depicted is the American animal par excellence, the bison.
