At 8:46 a.m., Dr. Zerhouni spoke in tribute to the victims of 9/11/01 and then asked that
everyone join him in a moment of silence in their memory.

l. Roadmap Funding

The NIH Directors discussed funding strategies for the Roadmap initiatives and decided to use a combination approach, including both the DDF/Roadmap funds and funds to be derived from all ICs on a pro rata basis. Attendees agreed that the NIH Steering Committee will carefully manage, monitor, and help sustain the momentum on Roadmap as it gears up into the next stage. Thanking the IC Directors for their commitment to synergistically advancing scientific knowledge in furtherance of the public health, Dr. Zerhouni said that he sees this as an historic moment for NIH; and he urged that everyone participate in the upcoming public announcements starting on September 29.

ll. NIH Steering Committee Update

Dr. Kington announced that the Steering Committee has begun its official activities and will be reporting regularly at upcoming meetings.

lll. Other Information Items

Dr. Kington reminded attendees that the NIH will host Canadian health officials at a joint leadership summit on October 27 and 28. The FIC is arranging the events, which will include panel discussions, a working lunch to which all IC Directors are invited, and one-on-one meetings.
