To get an original card, you must show us documents proving your immigration status, age, identity and work eligibility.

To get a replacement card, you must show us documents proving your immigration status, identity and work eligibility. You must also show us a document proving your age, if it is not already in our records.

All documents must be current (not expired).

To prove You must show

Your immigration status

One of the following documents:

  • I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, issued when you arrived in the United States;
  • I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (students only);
  • DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status (exchange visitors only);
  • Employment Authorization Card (I-766 or I-688B); or
  • Form I-551 (Permanent Resident Card).

Your age

One of the following documents:

  • Birth certificate;
  • Passport; or
  • Department of Homeland Security document.

Your identity

One of the following documents:

  • U.S. driver’s license;
  • State-issued nondriver’s identification card;
  • Form I-551 (Permanent Resident Card);
  • I-94, Arrival/Departure Record; or
  • Employment Authorization Card (I-766 or I-688B).
Your work eligibility

One of the following documents:

  • I-94, Arrival/Departure Record;
  • Work permits from the Department of Homeland Security
    (I-766 or I-688B);
  • Form I-551 (Permanent Resident Card); or
  • Immigrant visa showing temporary employment authorization.

You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies.
