Through its Clinical Occupational Health Program, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has led the way in:
- Implementing policies for VA on occupational health
- Aligning healthcare occupational health in the Federal sector with national standards
The Clinical Occupational Health Program has developed model program elements for clinical occupational health, using current clinical quality improvement programs to develop:
- Evidence-based practices for medical surveillance
- Pre-placement examinations and fitness for duty
- Clinical treatment protocols
The Clinical Occupational Health Program is also responsible for:
- Safe Patient Handling/Patient Transfer Ergonomics - This program is designed to minimize the chronic generation and acute injuries associated with the physical work demands of nursing and other professions in VHA that involve patient transfers.
- Occupational Health Infection Control - This program includes bloodborne pathogens, influenza vaccination, H1N1 flu vaccination, and multiple drug resistant staphylococcal aureus (MRSA).
