As African American History Month, February is a good time to remember that African-American children continue to be overrepresented in the child welfare system, and adoption professionals need to diligently recruit families that reflect the ethnic and racial diversity of children waiting for families. (See the Information Gateway web section on disproportionality.) This month's Adoption Triad provides resources on engaging African-American families in adoption.

  1. Visit the AdoptUSKids website to find (1) a publication on working with African-American families and (2) a list of agencies that specialize in working with African-American and other minority families:
  2. Review the following publications for more ideas on engaging African-American Families:
  3. Explore how emerging leaders of color are building capacity to address minority adoption issues through the Minority Adoption Leadership Development Institute (MALDI):

Adoption Triad is published on the third Tuesday of each month. We welcome your feedback on Adoption Triad, as well as on our website and publications.
