The War in Afghanistan officially began in 2001, following the September 11 attacks on the United States with the goal of dismantling the al-Qaeda terrorist organization and ending its use of Afghanistan as a base. Today the United States and its allies remain in Afghanistan in an effort to prevent the Taliban from returning to power and creating an environment that allows al-Qaeda to plan terrorist attacks.
