Afghanistan-War-Collection

The War in Afghanistan officially began in 2001, following the September 11 attacks on the United States with the goal of dismantling the al-Qaeda terrorist organization and ending its use of Afghanistan as a base. Today the United States and its allies remain in Afghanistan in an effort to prevent the Taliban from returning to power and creating an environment that allows al-Qaeda to plan terrorist attacks. In recognition of the efforts and sacrifice of those who have served in Afghanistan, the U.S. Government Printing Office offers for sale a collection of publications highlighting the history, political and military efforts, operations and challenges of the longest running war in the history of our nation.

Afghanistan: Alone & Unafraid

Publisher: Defense Dept., Navy, Marine Corps University Press

Description: This beautiful book of photographs from the U.S. Marine Corps transports you from the scholar’s study directly to the landscape and people of that starkly beautiful and troubled country. The first part of the book consists of photos shot in the countryside, using both color and black and white images to bring to life the mountains and plains, but above all the faces - faces of bearded men, women in head scarves, and smiling children - lots of children. The second part of the book switches to the Afghan National Army, or ANA. Here, the images are more of men in the process of learning the arts of modern Western warfare than of green troops in basic training.

A Different Kind of War: The United States Army in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, October 2001 - September 2005

Publisher: Defense Dept., Army, Combat Studies Institute, Contemporary Operations Study Team

Description: A Different Kind of War is the first comprehensive study of the US Army’s experience in Afghanistan during the first 4 years of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF). It focuses on Army operations in the larger Joint and Coalition campaign that evolved between October 2001 and September 2005. Beginning with a description of the successful offensive against the Taliban regime, launched in late 2001 in response to the attacks of 9/11, the book then shifts to the less well-understood campaign that began in 2002 to establish a peaceful and politically stable Afghanistan. This study sheds a great deal of light on the overall course of OEF.
