County and Puerto Rico Municipio Population Estimates: July 1, 2007 — Flagler County, named for the Florida East Coast Railway builder and situated along Florida's northeast coast, has been among the nation's fastest-growing counties in recent years. Was it the fastest growing last year? Internet tables showing population estimates, rankings and components of change for the nation's counties and county equivalents since Census 2000 and up to July 1, 2007, will reveal the answer. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-March.)

2007 Metropolitan and Micropolitan Area Population Estimates — St. George, a former farming community in Utah's southwest corner, has been the nation's fastest-growing metro area in recent years. Internet tables will show population estimates and rankings of change for St. George and the nation's other metro and micro areas between April 1, 2000, and July 1, 2007. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late March.)

Profiles of Older Workers: 2004 — The Census Bureau, in partnership with 31 states, has launched a series of reports on workers 55 and older. Colorado, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Maryland and Kentucky are scheduled to be released over the next month or two.

Economic

Economic Census Forms Overdue — While the Feb. 12 deadline has passed, business owners who received 2007 Economic Census forms are urged to complete and return them as soon as possible to satisfy their legal obligation. Businesses can get help with their forms online at <http://www.census.gov/econhelp>. Those businesses that need more time to complete the forms can use the site to request a 30-day extension. (Schedule for release March 3.)

Information and Communication Technology Survey: 2006 — First published in 2005, this data is a supplement to the Annual Capital Expenditures Survey. Covering capitalized and noncapitalized business expenditures on technology, this survey was created to meet the need for data on e-business infrastructure investment, an area vital to U.S. productivity growth. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early March.)

Pollution Abatement Costs and Expenditures: 2007 — This report shows detailed statistics on capital expenditures and operating costs for pollution prevention and pollution treatment for the manufacturing sector. These data are available by cost category (treatment/capture, prevention, disposal and recycling) and the media (air, water discharge and solid waste), both by state and industry. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early March.)

Current Industrial Reports provide monthly, quarterly and annual measures of industrial activity. The data are used to satisfy economic policy needs and for market analysis, forecasting and decision-making in the private sector. <http://www.census.gov/manufacturing/cir/>

Consolidated Federal Funds Report: 2006 — This annual data set provides an overview of federal spending at the national, state and county levels. The data are obtained from federal government agencies and describe spending for procurement contracts, salaries and wages, direct payments, loans and insurance. Department of Homeland Security data is included. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-March.)

Public Education Finances: 2006 — offers a comprehensive look at school district revenues and expenditures. Highlights include spending on salaries, construction, support services, administration and transportation. The report allows users to calculate per pupil expenditures and compare funding sources for public education by state. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-March.)

Facts for Features

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month (May) — We celebrate the contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans to our nation with statistical information on this group. Included is a separate set of statistics for Asians, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders covering demographics and businesses. (Scheduled for release on March 3.)

Older Americans Month (May) — We celebrate the contributions of our nation's older citizens with a collection of data on the demographic characteristics of the population 65 and older. (Scheduled for release on March 3.)

Cinco de Mayo (May 5) — "The Fifth of May," a national holiday in Mexico, has become a time to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture. The Census Bureau joins in the festivities with a collection of data relating to U.S. residents of Mexican descent. (Scheduled for release on March 5.)

Mother's Day (May 11) — Flowers, perfume and jewelry are all popular gifts given on this special day honoring our nation's moms. This fact sheet presents statistical information from the Census Bureau's economic and demographic subject areas on these and many other topics pertaining to this observance. (Scheduled for release on March 11.)

Editor's note: Facts for Features are customarily released about two months before an observance in order to accommodate magazine production timelines.

New History Web Site — The Census Bureau will have a new Internet site dedicated to the history of census taking in the United States since 1790. The site will contain information about the decennial and economic censuses, surveys, the agency, innovations and notable Census Bureau alumni. Additional links allow visitors to browse decade-by-decade historical facts and pop culture items related to the censuses, including photographic images, publications and historic documents. (Tentatively scheduled for launch in early March.)

Who's Minding the Kids? Child Care Arrangements: Spring 2005 — Feb. 28 — Grandparents (30 percent) and fathers (25 percent) were the child care of choice for the 19 million preschoolers when their mothers went to work.

County and City Data Book: 2007 — Feb. 28 — Three Texas cities (Frisco, Cedar Park, McKinney) had the fastest-growing labor force in the nation this decade. Four California cities (Rancho Palos Verdes, Manhattan Beach, Aliso Viejo, San Ramo) had some of the lowest rates of unemployment.

Maternity Leave and Employment Patterns: 1961-2003 — Feb. 25 — Two-thirds of women who had their first child between 2001 and 2003 worked during their pregnancy. In the early 1960s, just 44 percent did so.

2007 Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections — Feb. 29 — Preliminary summary of taxes collected by each state government for up to 25 tax categories. These data include collections by state governments only and do not include data on taxes collected by local governments. Internet address: <http://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/>.

2007 Census of Governments — Feb. 26 — A census of governments is taken at 5-year intervals. The census covers three major subject fields -- government organization, public employment and government finance.

The employment phase is tentatively scheduled for release in Fall 2008. The finance phase is tentatively scheduled for release in December 2008 (State government only) and in summer of 2009 (State and Local governments).

Economic Census Forms Due — Feb. 11 — Forms for the 2007 Economic Census, sent to more than 4 million businesses in December, were due back Feb. 12. Data from the economic census provide the foundation for the gross domestic product and other economic statistics, and also support both public policy and private business decisions.
