2010 Census

2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour — The 2010 Census Road Tour is part of the largest civic outreach and awareness campaign in U.S. history -- stopping and exhibiting at more than 800 events nationwide. Some upcoming stops include Miami Beach (Feb. 2), Broward County/Fort Lauderdale (Feb. 3), West Palm Beach (Feb. 4), Miami Gardens (Super Bowl, Feb. 7), Tampa (Florida State Fair, Feb. 9), Daytona Beach (Daytona 500, Feb. 14), Galveston, Texas (Feb. 18), San Antonio (Feb. 19) and Dallas (Feb. 20). Media advisories detailing dates and locations will be released several days before the events.

Demographic

Economic Characteristics of Households in the United States: Third Quarter 2008 — Examines the roles of government-sponsored benefit programs and the labor market in helping people cope with the recession. Specifically, it presents data on average monthly income, participation in government-sponsored social welfare or insurance programs and labor force activity during the period. The data are from the 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation; they do not supersede the official income estimates released in September 2009. (Scheduled for release in February.)

Economic

2008 Annual Capital Expenditures Survey — These data provide preliminary estimates of business spending for new and used structures and equipment at the sector level based on the 2002 North American Industry Classification System. These figures are critical to evaluate productivity growth, the ability of U.S. business to compete with foreign business, changes in industrial capacity and measures of overall economic performance. (Scheduled for release in early February.)

2008 Annual Survey of State and Locally Administered Public Employee Retirement Systems — This survey provides revenues, expenditures, financial assets and membership information for public employee retirement systems that are defined benefit plan pensions. Data are shown for individual retirement systems as well as at the national, state and local government level. This survey provides current data about investment decisions by state and local government employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. (Scheduled for release in early February.)

2007 Economic Census: Educational Services Geographic Area Series — This is a series of national-, state-, county-, place- and metro area-level data files on the educational services sector (NAICS 61). These include data for industries such as business schools, technical and trade schools, driving schools and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, receipts or revenue, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released February through June 2010. (Scheduled for release in mid-February.)

2007 Economic Census: Health Care and Social Assistance Geographic Area Series — This is a series of national-, state-, county-, place-, and metro area-level data files on the health care and social assistance sector (NAICS 62). These include data for industries such as doctor's offices, hospitals, nursing homes, child day care facilities and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, receipts or revenue, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released February through August 2010. (Scheduled for release in mid-February.)

2007 Economic Census: Manufacturing Geographic Area Series — This is a series of state-, county-, place- and metro area-level data files on the manufacturing sector (NAICS 31). These include data for industries such as bottled water, plastic bottles, breakfast cereal, retail bakery products, mobile homes, nitrogenous fertilizers and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released February through May 2010. (Scheduled for release in February.)

Facts for Features

2010 Census by the Numbers — To mark the nation's 23rd count of the population, the Census Bureau presents an array of basic facts about the 2010 Census. (Scheduled for release in mid-February.)

Census Historical Highlights: 1790 to 2010 — As a service to users interested in learning about the grand tradition of the decennial census, the Census Bureau presents a profile of each census since the first in 1790. (Scheduled for release in mid-February.)

Profile America and Al Día (Spanish) for January and February — Profile America segments include elderly income in "First Social Security Check" (Jan. 31) and a centennial of preparedness in "Boy Scouts at 100" (Feb. 8).

The daily features are available at <http://www.census.gov/multimedia/www/radio/>. There the menu options allow selection for Profile America and Al Día, with download options for MP3 (including podcast subscription) and WAV files, or zip files for the entire month (MP3).

February also brings a special Black History Month edition of Profile America, including features about astronaut Mae Jemison (Feb. 13) and mechanical engineer David Crosthwait (Feb. 20). Statistics on the Haitian Population — Jan. 22 — The Census Bureau has numerous resources providing demographic and socioeconomic information on Haitians in the United States and in Haiti. The page has a link to an interactive map showing the geographic distribution of the population of Haiti, based on publicly available information and providing population and housing data for areas chosen by the user. American Community Survey

Race and Hispanic Origin of the Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2007 — Jan. 20 — This report from American Community Survey data describes the race and Hispanic-origin composition of the foreign-born population in 2007 and compares it with that of the total and native-born populations. It shows the foreign-born have a pattern of race and Hispanic-origin reporting that is markedly different from the native population. 2010 Census

First Enumeration in Alaska — Jan. 25 — Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves officially started the 2010 Census by enumerating a household in Noorvik, an Inupiat Eskimo village in western Alaska. 2010 Web Site in Spanish — Jan. 21 — The U.S. Census Bureau launched its innovative, unique and digitally rich 2010 Census Spanish language Web Site, <www.2010census.gov/espanol>. The site informs the more than 34 million people who speak Spanish at home about the 2010 Census and demonstrates that participation is easy, important and safe. Home-Based Workers in the United States: 1999-2005 — Jan. 25 — This set of tables describes the type of employment, occupations, earnings, work schedules and other characteristics of those who work at home and compares them with the overall workforce and those workers who do not work at home. Finances of Selected State and Local Government Employee Retirement Systems: 3rd Quarter 2009 — Jan. 29 — This quarterly survey provides national summary data on the revenues, expenditures and composition of assets of the 100 largest state and local government employee retirement systems in the United States. These 100 systems comprise 89.4 percent of financial activity among such entities. This survey provides the most current data about investment decisions by state and local government employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. These data tables are published four months after each calendar quarter and show national financial transactions and trends for the past five years. 2007 Economic Census: Other Services (except Public Administration) Geographic Area Series — Jan. 22 — This is a series of national-, state-, county-, place- and metro area-level data files on the Other Services sector (NAICS 81). The files provide data on the number of establishments, receipts or revenue, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released January through August 2010. The files provide data on the number of establishments, revenue, payroll, number of employees and other data items by industry. These data will be released January through August 2010. Super Bowl XLIV (Feb. 7) — Jan. 25 — An array of statistics from the Census Bureau relating to the 44th edition of our most celebrated sporting event. The game has evolved into the nation's most-watched television broadcast of the year and the day on which it occurs, Super Bowl Sunday, into a de facto national observance. Includes data for Miami, site of the big game, as well as New Orleans and Indianapolis -- the cities represented by the two participating NFL teams.
