Over the years, GPO has developed practices and procedures for cataloging Federal Government documents. These practices are codified in the GPO Cataloging Guidelines.  There have been four updates to the Guidelines since the first edition was published in the 1990s. Further revisions to the Guidelines, including a consolidation of procedures that were issued individually is currently being undertaken by staff in the Bibliographic Control Unit of Library Technical Information Services.

As GPO develops the next generation of these Guidelines, the fourth edition of GPO's Cataloging Guidelines (2001) (as well as updates that were released in April 2007 and March 2008) are being made available as a single PDF file.
