In August, 26 states reported over-the-month unemployment
rate increases, 12 states and the District of Columbia had
decreases, and 12 states had no change. Nonfarm payroll
employment increased in 28 states, decreased in 21 states
and the district, and was unchanged in Colorado.

Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment (Monthly)

Jobless rates were lower in August than a year earlier in 325 of the
372 metropolitan areas, higher in 40, and unchanged in 7. Nonfarm
payroll employment was up in 274 metropolitan areas over the year,
down in 92, and unchanged in 6.

Annual average unemployment rates in 2011 declined in 48 states and rose
in 2 states and the District of Columbia. Employment-population ratios
decreased in 25 states and the district, increased in 18 states, and were
unchanged in 7 states.
