8.4 million adults aged 18 or older (3.7 percent of the adult population) had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year, and 4.0 million (48.6 percent) of these peceived mental health services in the past year. Young adults aged 18 to 25 were more likely than adults aged 26 or older to have had serious thoughts of suicide (6.4 vs. 3.3 percent), but young adults with suicidal thoughts and behavior were less likely than their older counterparts to have received mental health treatment (34.2 vs. 53.5 percent). Young adults aged 18 to 25 who attempted suicide also were less likely than their older counterparts to have received medical attention from a doctor or other health professional (37.2 vs. 74.4 percent).
