An ACS Summary File is a set of comma-delimited text files that contain all of the Detailed Tables for the ACS 1-year, 3-year or 5-year estimates. For example, the 2008 ACS 1-year Summary File includes hundreds of comma-delimited text files that are best viewed in a spreadsheet or using statistical software.

  • Summary File Retrieval Tool [ZIP 8.9MB] - an Excel Macro tool ideal for downloading 20 tables or less for all published geographies within a state.
  • DVD Set – The entire ACS 5-year Summary File is available in comma delimited text format on a set of DVDs.
    • Email your name and mailing address and specify dataset (2006-2010) to acso.dvd.order@census.gov to request a DVD set. You may be contacted for additional information before your request is filled.
    • The DVDs include technical documentation and all 5-year estimates for all geographic areas down to the block group.
  • DataFerrett – a web application that can be used to analyze and download a large number of tables for up to 67,000 geographic areas at a time.

Tools for using the ACS 5-year Summary File

  • Summary File Retrieval Tool [XLS 4.64MB] - an Excel Macro tool ideal for downloading 20 tables or less for all published geographies within a state.
  • DVD Set – The entire ACS 5-year Summary File is available in comma delimited text format on a set of DVDs.
    • Email your name and mailing address and specify dataset (2005-2009) to acso.dvd.order@census.gov to request a DVD set. You may be contacted for additional information before your request is filled.
    • The DVDs include technical documentation and all 5-year estimates for all geographic areas down to the block group.
  • DataFerrett – a web application that can be used to analyze and download a large number of tables for up to 67,000 geographic areas at a time.
  • Other Tools - such as SAS programs and Excel templates are available on the FTP site in the User Tools folder
