About NHLBI's HP 2010 Gateway

Issued in January 2000, Healthy People 2010 is the Federal Government's blueprint for building a healthier Nation over the next 10 years. It is designed to achieve two major overarching goals-to increase the quality and years of Americans' healthy life and to end racial and ethnic disparities in the burden of disease. The plan contains 467 objectives that are organized into 28 focus areas. Visit the main Healthy People 2010 Website for a full description of the focus areas and objectives.

The NHLBI Healthy People 2010 Gateway was developed to help achieve these goals and objectives. The Gateway provides quick, easy access to Institute information and resources on four key areas: cardiovascular health, asthma, sleep, and minority populations.

Each area has its own portal, which outlines the Institute's efforts to meet the Healthy People 2010 goals and objectives. These include activities and materials from the Institute's national education programs and initiatives.

The portals offer a wealth of resources to help health professionals plan their own Healthy People activities. For instance, the portals have public and professional education materials, notices of upcoming meetings, conferences, and exhibits, and opportunities for health professionals to do long-distance learning--and get continuing education credits.

The Gateway also lets you shop online in the NHLBI materials catalog--fill your shopping basket, or print or download many of the items for free.

Additionally, the Gateway has quick links to popular NHLBI Web-based applications on asthma, sleep, cholesterol, and high blood pressure, as well as to the Federal Government's Healthy People 2010 Web site.

Finally, the Gateway lets you sign on as an NHLBI partner in health by joining the Institute's Health Information Network (HIN). As a partner, you'll receive updates about new NHLBI programs, research findings, resources, and upcoming events. You'll also be able to share your experiences in health promotion and disease prevention with other HIN partners.

NHLBI hopes you will find this electronic Gateway to be a useful service. We plan to continually add to the Gateway's offerings and welcome your feedback and suggestions on its contents.
