U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to visit New York City to present the 2012 Broad Prize for Urban Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will travel to New York City on Tuesday, Oct. 23, where he will present the 2012 Broad Prize for Urban Education, visit a school that is preparing students for college and career readiness, and participate in a forum that highlights various approaches to linking education and jobs.

During his presentation of the Broad Prize, which will take place at 11 a.m. at the Museum of American Art, Duncan will give brief remarks commending school districts that are pursuing district-wide reforms to improve public education. The Broad Prize, established in 2002, is the largest education award in the country given each year to honor urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement, while reducing achievement gaps among low-income and minority students. The winner will receive $550,000 in college scholarships for high school seniors who graduate in 2013. Live webcast of the announcement will be available at www.broadprize.org.

In the afternoon, Duncan will visit Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), an innovative high school that connects school, college and the world of work through partnerships that prepare students for higher education and careers. The science, technology, engineering and math curriculum at P-TECH leads to the simultaneous granting of a high school diploma and an associate’s degree. The school opened its doors in 2011 as a partnership between IBM, the New York City Department of Education, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the City University of New York, and New York City College of Technology.

Following the school visit, Duncan will join leaders from businesses, community colleges, school districts and government to discuss strategies to prepare students with the skills to build successful careers. The forum, “From Classroom to Career: Investing in Tomorrow’s Workforce,” will begin at 2 p.m., and Duncan will join at 4 p.m. The event will be streamed live at https://new.livestream.com/roosevelthouse/fromclassroomtocareer. The event is sponsored by IBM, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, and the Partnership for New York City. Brenda Dann-Messier, the Department’s assistant secretary for vocational and adult education, and Suzanne Immerman, the Department’s director of strategic partnerships, will join Duncan for the school visit and the forum.
