How to Use CBP.gov Menus and Buttons

CBP.gov has approximately 200,000 pages and documents of information grouped into 6 main topics (about cbp, newsroom, border security, trade, travel, and careers). Often, how you get around a website is referred to as navigating, while buttons, links and menus are referred to as navigation. We took into consideration the quantity of material provided on CBP.gov as well as the wide variety of our visitors’ website navigating preferences when designing the navigational elements to help visiting CBP.gov be as pleasant and productive as possible. Below we provide images and descriptions of common buttons and page layouts.

Main Menus

Menu Banner

The menu banner makes our main topics available on each page of the site. DHS Seal and Logotype link to the CBP.gov home page. Search allows you to enter a keyword or phrase then click GO to search the entire CBP.gov website. On your search results page you will find options to refine your search as well as an advanced search option. You may also see SmartLinks which help navigate users to main topics based on their keyword search. Site map shows all topic categories on a single page. Individual pages are not shown.

Footer Menu

Appears at the bottom of each page and provides links to What's New on CBP.gov, CBP Contacts, Ports, Questions, Forms, and Sitemap. Additionally, it provides links to information on FOIA, Privacy Statement, How to Use the Website, Department of Homeland Security and USA.Gov.

Standard Buttons

What's New

Located in the top right column of each section's spotlight page and the footer of every page on the website. The footer link to What's New will display the new links of information contained in all sections of CBP.gov. What's New on a section homepage will display new links for that section only.

See Also
See Also image.
Once you have clicked on a left subsection button, all pages show "See Also" links located in the right column. It will contain links grouped according to their origin that provide additional information related to the page you are currently viewing.


Section Search (Scoped Search)

All section link pages (not article pages or downloads), contain a scoped search window in the right column. It enables you to perform a keyword search limited to the section of the site you are viewing. This section is indicated in the search button by italics (newsroom is shown).

Bread Crumbs

Bread crumbs show right under the menu banner at the top of each page. They indicate the position of the page you are looking at in relation to the CBP.gov homepage as if you left bread crumbs as you clicked through the website. The words are clickable offering a way to walk backwards from the page you are on, through the broader related topics all the way to the CBP.gov homepage.

This button will send a version of your page to your printer that has been specially formatted to fit on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. This option is only available on article and linklist pages.

Right Column
Links to top CBP news stories and programs.

Section Homepages

Left Column
Shows the menu for this section of the site and will constantly show while visiting any page in this section. All pages for this section can be found in one of the categories in the left column. A link to What's New for this section of the website is provided which displays new or updated content for this section in the last 7 days.

Center Column
The flash presentation links to content that is considered high priority for this section of the website. The green boxes provide quick access to frequenty used links for this section.

Subtopic Menus

Left Column
Shows the menu for this section of the site and will constantly show while visiting any page in this section. All pages for this section can be found in one of the categories in the left column.

Center Column
Shows the pages that are within the category you selected from the left column. An arrow before a link shows that it is a folder containing several web pages and/or folders. A dash before a link shows that it is a single web page to read. If a link goes to a download page (such as a Microsoft Word document or an Adobe Acrobat file) the file type, file icon, and file size will be shown in parenthesis after the link title.

Right Column
This area is called see also and lists links that are related to the web page that you are currently visiting. The see also links are categorized to help you understand the origin of the links listed.

Web Article Page

Shows the menu for this section of the site and will constantly show while visiting any page in this section. All pages for the section you are visiting can be found in one of the categories in the left column.

Center Column
Shows the content of the web article page you selected.

Right Column
