AFC 1943/015: Luiz Heitor Correâ de Azevedo and E. Nogueira França Recordings from Goiânia, Brazil

Field recordings of music and folk drama recorded in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil by Luiz Heitor Correâ de Azevedo and E. Nogueira França from June 24-27, 1942 with Library of Congress support and equipment. The recordings represent traditional music and music composed by the performers, including instrumental music, dance music, and songs with guitar, viola, accordion, cavaquinho, and drum, plus interviews with the performers. Also includes recordings of "Congo," a folk play acted, danced, spoken and sung by Silvestre da Costa Santos and his players, and "Dansa dos Tapuios," a folk ballet danced and sung by Waldejou Mancel da Paixão and his dancers (AFS 7019-7036). Manuscripts include correspondence for the field project dating from 1941 to 1953 and a copy of Azevedo's detailed course outline, "Classe de Folclore Nacional, Escola Nacional de Música," on Brazilian folk music and folklore, including indigenous music, Afro-Brazilian music and dance, and popular music, in Portuguese (69 p., photocopy). AFC 1945/008: Luiz Heitor Correâ de Azevedo and E. Nogueira França Recordings from Ceará, Brazil

Additional f ield recordings of Brazilian folk songs, improvisations, folk dances, and folk plays (Bois do Reis, Fandango, Congo, Cana-Verde), romances, religious songs, desafios, louvaçãos, cocos, Xangô tunes, and other songs, with accompaniment by guitar, cavaquinho, accordion, banjo, tambourine, drum, cymbals, violin, viola, cuíca, ganzá, and gonguê recorded by Luiz Heitor Correâ de Azevedo and E. Nogueira França at various locations in Ceará. Includes field recording itinerary, and Azevedo's lists of the titles, with descriptions in Portuguese and English (AFS 7324-7398). [catalog record]

AFC 1948/002: Luiz Heitor Correâ de Azevedo and E. Silva Novo Collection of Folksongs of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Third accsssion of field recordings of music collected by Luiz Heitor Correâ de Azevedo and E. Silva Novo in January and February 1944. Genres include folksongs, popular songs, dance music, guitar music, brass band music, religious chant, interviews, group singing, toasts and songs performed at a dinner; duets, children's game songs, Christmas begging songs, work songs of stone-cutters and mine workers, street cries, and other music of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Instrumentals and accompaniment played on guitar, violin, viola, cello, banjo, harmonica, trombone, clarinet, bells, cavaquinho, drum, tamborine, and various other percussion instruments (AFS 7764-7860).  Manuscripts include Azevedo's field recording itinerary and lists of the titles, with descriptions in Portuguese and English. AFC 1970/002: Literatura de Cordel Brazilian Chapbook Collection, 1930-2008

Open collection of more than 9000 Brazilian chapbooks (literatura de cordel) dating from 1930 to the present, created through annual accruals collected by the Library of Congress's Rio Office in Brazil. Approximately 300 chapbooks are added to this collection each year. The collection includes thirteen seven-inch tapes of romances and other songs recorded by Sol Biderman in northeastern Brazil, circa 1968-1970 (AFS 14178-14190). [catalog record]

AFC 1999/033: Brazilian Woodcut Prints Collection

Eleven large Brazilian woodcut prints, ten by J. Borges (José Francisco Borges), signed and dated 1997 and 1998; and one by Erivaldo (Erivaldo Silva), 1995. The J. Borges prints were donated to the Library of Congress as a "Gift to the Nation" during the Library of Congress Bicentennial by the Ambassador of Brazil, Rubens Barbosa, on 16 November 1999. AFC 2005/008: Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo Collection on Latin American Folklore

Publications pertaining to Latin American folklore and musical traditions from the library of Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo, Brazilian folklorist and musicologist. The collection includes monographs, articles, bibliographies, conference proceedings, and other publications, 1904-1986, about folk music, musical instruments, popular music, dance, folklore, food traditions, proverbs, children's folklore, traditional and folk medicine, local religious celebrations (including Christmas, Epiphany, and Easter). Among other topics in the collection materials are Afro-Brazilian traditions, devotions to various saints, and anthropological studies of indigenous people of Brazil. Most publications are about Brazilian folk culture, but include significant works from other Latin American countries. [catalog record]

AFC 2006/019: Sol Biderman Collection

Sol Biderman's writings and research materials on folk literature, including 326 Brazilian chapbooks (literatura de cordel) and one Italian chapbook published between 1958 and 2003; 78 woodblock prints, postcards, and posters; printed materials; and artifacts, including fourteen original woodcut blocks used in printing chapbook covers and four boxes containing works by Guilherme de Faria. Collection includes three tapes of Brazilian and Italian poetry and songs recorded by Sol Biderman in Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, and Ceara in 1967-1968 (SR01-SR03). [catalog record]

AFC 2007/025: Henrique Vieira Leite Collection of Brazilian Literatura de Cordel / by Henrique Vieira Leite

Twenty-six Brazilian literatura de cordel chapbooks (circa eight pages each) of poetry on contemporary events by author Henrique Vieira Leite, with woodcut cover illustrations signed by Erivaldo (Erivaldo Silva); most are dated 2002 to 2009, though a few are undated. The publishers are Preserve a Natureza e a Cultura Popular Brasileira, or Academia Brasileira de Literatura de Cordel. Donated by Henrique Vieira Leite, 2008. [catalog record]

AFC 2008/001: David A. Taylor Collection of Literatura de cordel, 1978-1980, and undated

Collection of Brazilian chapbooks dated 1978, 1980, and undated, acquired in Washington, D.C. by the donor. Cordel authors include José Pacheco, Apolônio Alves dos Santos, João Lopes Freire, and Manoel Camilo dos Santos.   [catalog record]
