Description: One hundred and sixty discs recorded in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia in July and August, 1941 by Alan Lomax, Joseph Liss, Jerome Wiesner. This trip documented the folk festivals at Asheville, North Carolina, and Galax, Virginia, and made numerous documentary recordings of the Wilmington experiment in Georgia and Tennessee, particularly in Blairsville, Georgia. Description: Photocopy of a handwritten manuscript entitled "Songbook" by Lyddie F. Hubark of Rombauer, Missouri, containing the lyrics for thirty-two popular American folksongs and ballads. Written ca. 1932, it was copied in 1992 from the original belonging to Hubark's nephew, the late Charles O. Ferris, of Gutler County, Missouri. It is accompanied by a 76-page transcription of the songs prepared by Killam. Title: Ryl's'ki Institute Ukrainian Cylinder Collection
Description: Thirty-seven U-Matic DATs (copied from ca. 200 wax cylinders), 7 linear inches of manuscripts, 64 graphic materials primarily collected during the early twentieth century (ca. 1908-1930s) by Ukrainian folklorists and musicologists, and include Ukrainian folk music traditions from various regions of Ukraine including the Kharkiv (Kharkov) region in what was then Soviet Ukraine and the Carpathian region of Eastern Galicia in Interwar Poland (1919-1939). These regions are now part of present day Ukraine. The collection is primarily comprised of field recordings on wax cylinders held by the Ryl's'kyi Institute of Art, Folklore Studies and Ethnology (Kiev, Ukraine). There are approximately 400 individual song and instrumental compositions representing several genres and performance styles specific to Ukraine, including bardic traditions (secular and religious songs), seasonal ritual folk songs (winter carols, spring songs), life-cycle rituals (weddings, funerals, etc.), as well as ballads, and instrumental and ensemble compositions. Of significant note are recordings of blind minstrels (e.g., "kobzari," lirnyky) probably made during the late 1920s and early 1930s before Stalinist purges, which destroyed the musicians and their distinct performance practices as well as the lives of many of the ethnographers who collected these song traditions. The collection also includes musical transcriptions of some of the recordings made by folklorists of the period as well as accompanying ethnographic photographs of performers and their instruments dating from the turn of the 20th Century and from 1960. Additional documentation includes photocopies of slips of paper that were in the cylinder containers, many of which identify the contents of the cylinder. Other photographs document Joseph Hickerson's trip to Ukraine and the Ryl's'kyi Institute in March 1994. Two videos, produced in 1994, promoting the institutional collaboration between the Ryl's'kyi Institute and the Library are also included in the collection.

Description: The photographic prints, sound recording, and manuscript material were produced during an ethnographic study onducted by Sergei Zhirkevich in which he documented the enduring folk and religious traditions of regional provincial life in the former Soviet Union. Zhirkevich spent over a decade interviewing local people, recording music, and photographing in the Pskov Region of Russia, the former Baltic states, the Leningrad region, Kazakhstan, and the region north of the Caucasus Mountains. Description: This collection is composed of a variety of materials relating to "The Portable Folk Festival." In June 1971, 16 folk musicians boarded a 1947 reconditioned bus in Berkeley, California, for a cross-country, summer-long performance tour. The self-titled "Hoopers," documented their daily life in various media for the 2 1/2 month journey. Included are: 5 manuscripts highlighted by a 119-page travel log; 15 photos; 25 contact sheets; 1 original poster; one itinerary drafted on a continental U.S. map; and 13 pieces of ephemera. In addition, two original indexed audiocassettes of music and performers' commentary. Others on the "Portable Folk Festival" Tour included: Mike Cogan, Larry Hanks, Jon Wilcox, Jim Ringer (deceased), and Faith Petric. The 119-page log was updated daily by a rotation of "Hoopers," and provides an intimate look at the genre of the times through the activities and reflections of the "Portable" participants. Of note, also, is a detailed accounting of the "Portable Folk Festival" authored by journalist Amie Hill and published in the San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle, November 21, 1971.

The Archive's Hyman collections includes 40 audiotapes and 1,475 pages of typewritten or dittoed lyrics of ballads, blues, and folksongs. Description: Collection of digital video, sound recordings, and photographs documenting a concert of tamburitza music and songs performed by the Bajich Brothers, September 17, 2008 in the Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress, as part of the Homegrown concert series sponsored by the American Folklife Center. Tamburas are a family of fretted, steel-stringed acoustic instruments common to several countries in southeastern Europe, including Serbia. They have four to six steel strings, and are usually played with a plectrum. Tambura music (also known as tamburitza or tamburica, after common diminutives for tambura), has been widely played in ethnic communities in the United States since the nineteenth century. The four Bajich brothers were joined by their sisters, children, and extended family on stage to sing a hymn at the opening of the concert, and to demonstrate a Serb circle dance at the end.

Description: This collection consists of audio recordings, manuscript materials and moving images which are the products of a 2-year field study conducted by the Library of Congress and Fisk University during the summers of 1941-42. Field research was done in Coahoma County, Mississippi, and contains examples of secular and religious music, sermons, children's games, jokes, folktales, interviewes, and dances. Among the manuscript materials are song lists, correspondence, disc jackets, and research notes. Recordings include blues songs, field hollers, ballads, game songs, gospels and spirituals as well as spoken materials such as interviews, sermons, speeches, jokes, lying contests, and folktales. The Mississippi records were made in connection with the socio-musical survey undertaken by the Library of Congress and Fisk University. Description: Fifty-eight six-inch dictaphone cylinders and five four-inch cylinders recorded by Truman Michelson in July 1912 and perhaps on other Bureau of American Ethnology-sponsored field trips to the Fox (Mesquakie) community at Tama, Iowa. Approximately 2/3 of the cylinders contain songs of the Religion Dance (the Central Algonquian rite known elsewhere as the Drum or Dream Dance). Most of the cylinders were transferred from the National Archives in 1948; one additional cylinder was located and transferred from the Smithsonian Institution in 1981.

Title: Tu'er Ye Image and Manuscript Collection, 2003-2004
Description: Academic paper on the tradition (7 pp.) by Meng Yu, donor. Tu'er ye is a clay statue that was given to children during the mid-autumn festival in Beijing and Tianjin, China until approximately the 1950s. Tu'er ye is also the name of a rabbit god who accompanies a moon goddess during the festival, as well as the name for the child's toy, which depicts a rabbit in an outfit traditionally worn by a Chinese general, with a solemn expression on its face. Title: Working in Paterson Project Collection
Description: Eighty-seven audio cassette and digital audio tapes, 6192 still photographs (color and black-and-white), 690 audiotape and photograph catalogs, and 314 pages of fieldnotes, in addition to administrative correspondence, maps, publications, and ephemera from the Working in Paterson Folklife Project of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The four-month study of occupational culture in Paterson, New Jersey, was conducted in 1994. Paterson became the largest silk manufacturing center in the United States as well as a manufacturer of many other products, from railroad locomotives to firearms. This collection also includes materials about the African American community, a distinctive food tradition (the Hot Texas Wiener), the ethnography of Watson Machine International, business life along 21st Avenue in Paterson, and narratives told by retired workers. Collected by Tom Carroll, Martha Cooper, Susan Levitas, Timothy Lloyd, Robert McCarl, and David Taylor. The collection also includes materials generated for the American Memory online presentation.

Description: Coordinated under the auspices of the Office of War Information (OWI), Special Services Administration, which was established to achieve a coordinated governmental war-information program. The project created a collection of manuscripts, including some graphics. The program aimed to promote an intelligent understanding of the status and progress of the war effort, war policies, activities, and the aims of the United States government. This project has two distinct components. The first component involved field representatives of various federal agencies who sent OWI manuscripts, or written reports, which they collected from individuals or "correspondents." The second component involved materials that were rumors, jokes, and anecdotes about the war from high school and college students collected by teachers.
