AFC 1941/011: Radio Research Project Recordings
One hundred and three discs recorded in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia in July and August, 1941 by Alan Lomax, Joseph Liss, Jerome Wiesner. This trip documented the folk festivals at Asheville, North Carolina, and Galax, Virginia, and made numerous documentary recordings of the Wilmington experiment in Georgia and Tennessee, particularly in Blairsville, Georgia. AFC 1982/009: Blue Ridge Parkway Folklife Project Collection
Collection contains more than 13 linear feet of sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, manuscripts, sheet music, printed ephemera, artifacts, administrative records, and ethnographers' field notes related to the 1978 Blue Ridge Parkway Project field survey, which examined folklife in and around an area of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Virginia and North Carolina border. The project documented folk music, vernacular architecture, quilting, foodways, religious music and beliefs, as well as dance events featuring square dancing and flatfoot dancing, and interviews with dancers. The collection includes two publications based on these materials and a final report presented to the National Park Service: "The Process of Field Research, Final Report on the Blue Ridge Parkway Folklife Project" by Carl Fleischhauer and Charles Wolfe. Johnson is a fiddler, fiddle and dulcimer maker, woodcarver, and restorer of mechanical toys and antique cars. The CDs include fiddler Gene Johnson, Dane's late brother, and guitarist Gene Hamlin. Color photographs of fiddles, carved canes, rifles, and antique toys in Dane Johnson's home. The collection was donated by Kimberly Allen, who is the niece of Dane Johnson.
