AFC 1950/032: BBC Collection of Folk Music of the British Isles and Ireland
Forty-six 12-inch discs of field recordings of instrumentals on fiddle, concertina, tin whistle, accordion, drum, and other instruments; songs; and customs, including mummer's plays, sword dances, morris dances, and hobby horse ceremonies, recorded in Great Britain and Ireland by various collectors, 1943-1949, for the British Broadcasting Corporation. Some captains of the English mumming and dance groups were interviewed about their traditions. The collection includes song lists and correspondence (dated 1949-1952) between Marie T. Slocombe of the British Broadcasting Corporation and Duncan Emrich of the Archive of Folk Song, Library of Congress, about the BBC's folk music collections and exchanges with the Library of Congress.
