Four 10-inch tapes of field recordings of storytelling and interviews with watermen and others in Crisfield, Lawsonia, and Fairmount, on the eastern shore of Maryland; and in Rhodes Point, Ewell, and Tylerton harbor on Smith Island, Maryland. Includes stories about oystering, fishing, crabbing, and sailing skipjacks on the Chespeake Bay; local history; experiences and beliefs about weather; discussions about dialect and occupational words and expressions; stories about preachers, family histories, ghost stories, ghost ships, and supernatural experiences. AFC 1977/008: Alex Kellam Collection
Twenty-one 7-inch tapes of interviews, songs, and stories spoken and sung mostly by Alex Kellam, recorded primarily in Crisfield, Maryland, by George G. Carey and Carl Fleischhauer, 1977-78. The collection includes seventy pages of notes and transcriptions and fourteen pages of photocopied contact sheets of photographs of Crisfield, Kellam, and various watercraft. Kellam is a waterman, folk painter, storyteller, and insurance agent from Crisfield, Maryland. The collection includes approximately 445 photographs of Alex Kellam, Dot Kellam, decoy maker Lem Ward, landscapes, house types, copies of scrapbook photos, and copies of manuscript versions of Kellam's poems. Eighteen 10-inch tapes of Greek and Lithuanian songs recorded in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin by Jonas Balys, 1949-59. The collection includes five linear inches of manuscripts containing an alphabetic index of songs, copies of six diaries of field expeditions, and photocopies of original tape boxes having supplementary information.

AFC 1981/018: Ethnic Broadcasting in America Collection
Eighteen 7-inch tapes, two five-inch tapes, and one hundred seventeen cassettes of ethnic radio broadcasts recorded for the Ethnic Broadcasting in America Project of the American Folklife Center. Recorded mostly off the air by Elena Bradunas, Theodore Grame, Alan Jabbour, and others at various locations in the United States, 1977-78. Documentation includes Theodore Grame's Ethnic Broadcasting in the United States (Washington, D.C.: American Folklife Center, 1980; PN1991.8.E84G7) and nine linear inches of manuscript materials.

AFS 23,085-23,089: Five cassettes containing two German, one Italian, and two Lithuanian radio programs broadcast by radio station WITH-FM in Baltimore, Maryland. Recorded September-November 1978 by Elena Bradunas for the American Folklife Center's Ethnic Braodcasting in America project.

AFC 1984/011: American Dialect Society Collection
Sound recordings made between 1931-1937 to document American English dialects, mostly from New England and eastern Canada, for a proposed Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. Most informants were elderly New Englanders, and included whalers, fisherman, farmers, and housewives. Among the well-known people who were recorded are Alistair Cooke, Charles H. Grandgent, John A. Lomax, Alan Lomax, Edward Sapir, and B. F. Skinner. Some recordings were made of Gullah dialects found on the Georgia and South Carolina coast and recordings include narratives of former slaves. Several recordings document other languages and regions. The collection includes project correspondence, transcriptions, and index cards. [catalog record] [finding aid]

AFS 25,741; 25,743: Two discs containing an interview with Gustavus Garnett Dudley about local businesses, shipping local goods to Baltimore, Maryland, sailors, occupations (continued), health, fishing, local paper mill, nationalities, racial relations, oysters, and prices for fish locally versus those in Baltimore. Recorded in Buena Vista district, King and Queen Co., Virginia, ca. 1935.

AFS 25,753: One disc containing an interview with Mrs. Rosie Francis Wimstead Tyson about a trip to Baltimore, Maryland, by steamer in former times, churches, racial relations, memories of Civil War, farming, and personal history. Recorded in Hyacinth, Northumberland County, Virginia, ca. 1935.

AFC 1984/032: Gerald E. Parsons Interview with Robert Litzenberg
Three 7-inch tapes of a discussion about railbird hunting, upland bird hunting, and waterfowling on the Upper Chesapeake, 1924-present, spoken by Robert Litzenberg. AFC 1985/005: University of Maryland Ethnic Studies Video Collection
Four videocassettes of programs 1-4 of the "Mosaic - The American Ethnic Experience" instructional video series, produced by the University of Maryland Ethnic Studies Project (Edward Jurewicz - production manager), and supported by a grant from the Ethnic Heritage Studies Branch of the U.S. Office of Education.

AFC 1986/022: Center for Applied Linguistics Collection
Fifty-nine 10-inch tapes of speech samples, linguistic interviews, oral histories, conversations, and excerpts from public speeches recorded at various locations in North America by various collectors, and compiled by the Center for Applied Linguistics for a project entitled "A Survey and Collection of American English Dialect Recordings." The collection includes fourteen linear inches of documentation, including an introduction and preface, a list of contents, content summaries, and transcripts. Collectors and interviewees vary, representing approximately 43 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Canada, and Puerto Rico. [catalog record] [online presentation]

Twenty-four 5-inch tapes, 60 7-inch tapes, and 288 audiocassettes from the Ethnic Heritage and Language Schools in America Project, a survey of 23 ethnic schools from 22 ethnic groups. Recorded in various locations throughout the United States by Elena Bradunas and 23 fieldworkers, April-July 1982, sponsored by the American Folklife Center. The collection includes fourteen linear feet of slides, photographs, and reports. Includes documentation of a Korean school (founded in 1977) located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Recorded at the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC, December 15, 1993. The presenter was Phyllis A. Lesansky. The collection includes a flyer for the event which includes recipes for the above pastries.

Two hundred and seventy-five 10-inch tapes of bluegrass, country, and folk music, recorded in California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia, primarily by Mike Seeger, 1953-67. AFC 1997/011: Lands' End All-American Quilt Collection
Lands' End in cooperation with Good Housekeeping magazine sponsored quilt contests in 1992, 1994, and 1996. The collection,housed in 154 boxes, consists of visual images, entry blanks, and essays written by entrants, as well as Lands End administrative files and correspondence pertinent to the promotion of the contest. Approximately 13,100 entries for the three contests came from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. AFC 2001/001: Local Legacies Collection
Four hundred and five linear feet (approximately 90,000 manuscript pages, 475 sound recordings, 13,270 graphic materials, 335 electronic media, and 75 artifacts) of documentation of local festivals, fairs, parades, and other community-based events from each U.S. state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories and trusts. The Local Legacies Collection was donated through the efforts of individuals, organizations, and institutions asked to participate by members of Congress. The collection documents reactions of ordinary citizens in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States through sound and video recordings of interviews and personal narratives; as well as photographs, children's drawings, two scrapbooks, letters and e-mail, poems, ephemera, and a few artifacts. Some items were submitted as group projects of schools, libraries, and museums from 30 states in the U.S., and from American military service personnel and their families in Naples, Italy. Original analog tapes and digitized copies of the tapes, representing over 40 hours of original field recordings made between 1958 and 1961 in Baltimore, Maryland; Clarksdale, Mississippi; Chicago, Illinois; Delaney, Arkansas; Los Angeles, California; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; New York, New York; St. Louis, Missouri, and in Northern Georgia. The recordings comprise 724 songs and interviews with 20 of the musicians (including 12 blues and street singers).
