AFC 1939/002: Alan Lomax CBS Radio Series Collection
Recordings and manuscript materials connected with his participation in the "CBS American School of the Air," which was broadcast from 1939-41. Programs were aired weekly and were based on themes such as work songs, railroad songs, whaling ballads, game songs, and play-party songs. Among featured performers were: The Bogtrotters (of Galax, Virginia), The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, Aunt Molly Jackson, Huddie (Leadbelly) Leadbetter, Alan Lomax, Pete Seeger, and Joshua (Josh) White. Much of the collection's correspondence is from listeners requesting that particular songs be sung during the show. Many songs submitted by listeners were later sung on the show either by Lomax or by the listeners who submitted them. AFC 1941/002: The Library of Congress / Fisk University Mississippi Delta Collection
This collection consists of audio recordings, manuscript materials and moving images which are the products of a 2-year field study conducted by the Library of Congress and Fisk University during the summers of 1941-42. Field research was done in Coahoma County, Mississippi, and contains examples of secular and religious music, sermons, children's games, jokes, folktales, interviewes, and dances. Among the manuscript materials are song lists, correspondence, disc jackets, and research notes. Recordings include blues songs, field hollers, ballads, game songs, gospels and spirituals as well as spoken materials such as interviews, sermons, speeches, jokes, lying contests, and folktales. The Mississippi records were made in connection with the socio-musical survey undertaken by the Library of Congress and Fisk University. The Virginia records were made for the purpose of public pressings, and contain the songs of the Ward Family, Mrs. Gladden, and the Ball Family. [catalog record] [finding aid]

Seven 12-inch discs of thirty-five songs and monologues performed by Woody Guthrie, Alan Lomax, J.M. "Sailor Dad" Hunt, Private Rotson, and Wade Mainer’s Mountaineers. Recorded at rehearsals for "An Evening of American Song for American Soldiers" at the White House, Washington, D.C., by Alan Lomax, February 1941. AFC 1941/011: Radio Research Project Recordings
One hundred and three discs recorded in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia in July and August, 1941 by Alan Lomax, Joseph Liss, Jerome Wiesner. This trip documented the folk festivals at Asheville, North Carolina, and Galax, Virginia, and made numerous documentary recordings of the Wilmington experiment in Georgia and Tennessee, particularly in Blairsville, Georgia. Much of the work was done through the offices of Mr. Landis of the TVA in Nashville. Includes an interview with Mrs. Julia Wolfe, mother of Thomas Wolfe. AFC 1941/028: Alan and Elizabeth Lomax Collection of Virginia Recordings
Ten 16-inch discs of field recordings of folk songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, dance music, interviews, and conversation. Music played on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and autoharp. AFC 1970/001: Eleanor Dickinson Collection
video recordings, sound recordings, manuscripts, photographs, graphic materials, and artifacts documents Protestant religious revival meetings of various denominations in the southern Appalachian region, primarily in Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, and Georgia. The collection includes interviews with church leaders and members of congregations, and documentation of religious services, healing services, revivals, hymn singing, sermons, snake handling, and other religious rites and customs recorded by Eleanor Dickinson from 1968 to 1991. Other topics include beekeeping, church roadside signs, religious quilts, snake hunting, drinking strychnine, decorating graves in cemeteries, church dinners, and more. The collection also includes audio logs and transcripts, video logs, the collector's powerpoint presentations (2004), documentation of Dickinson's exhibition, Revival!, at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1970; and other manuscript materials. Sound recordings made between 1931-1937 to document American English dialects, mostly from New England and eastern Canada, for a proposed Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. Most informants were elderly New Englanders, and included whalers, fisherman, farmers, and housewives. Among the well-known people who were recorded are Alistair Cooke, Charles H. Grandgent, John A. Lomax, Alan Lomax, Edward Sapir, and B. F. Skinner. Some recordings were made of Gullah dialects found on the Georgia and South Carolina coast and recordings include narratives of former slaves. AFC 1995/004: Mike Seeger Collection
Two hundred and seventy-five 10-inch tapes of bluegrass, country, and folk music, recorded in California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia, primarily by Mike Seeger, 1953-67. The collection includes three linear inches of computer disks, correspondence, notes, and photos. These tapes supplement his collections already in the archive. Includes some examples made by other collectors, including recordings of autoharpist, John Kilby Snow recorded by Blaine Jaeger. Bluegrass music predominates this collection. A number of the tapes were recorded from radio and TV programs. Bluegrass performers represented include Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Don Reno, and Red Smiley. Tapes also include interviews with country music artists of the 1920s and 1930s including Tom Ashley, Sam and Kirk McGee, Ernest V. Stoneman, Gid Tanner, and Frank Walker. In their reminiscences with Seeger, they speak of many other old-time musicians whom they knew and worked with, life on the road, musical sources, etc.

AFC 1997/001: Beverly Underwood / Bill Vernon--Mike Seeger Interview Collection
The program was part of a retrospective series on Folkways Records after the death of its founder, Moses Asch. This 1-hour segment was broadcast over WVTF-FM, Roanoke, Virginia, on September 9, 1987, when it was recorded by the donor. Its interest lies in Seeger's detailed recollections of the artists on some of his field recordings for the ten LPs he edited for Folkways. The artists named and heard are Gaither Carlton, Hillary Dickens (Hazel Dickens's father), the New Lost City Ramblers, Seeger himself, the Stanley Brothers, Uncle Bunt Stephens, Ernest "Pop" Stoneman, and Wade Ward. Also heard is an unnamed trio playing three Jew's harps.

The International Storytelling Collection contains manuscripts, sound recordings, graphic materials, moving images, electronic media, and artifacts that relate to the storytelling revival of the 1970s through the present. Based in Jonesborough, Tennessee, the International Storytelling Center (ISC) and its predecessor organizations, the National Association for the Preservation and Perpetuation of Storytelling (NAPPS), and the National Storytelling Association (NSA) collected these materials. AFC 2010/015: Alicia J. Rouverol Collection on Northern Neck, Virginia, Watermen
Oral history interviews with 30 watermen from the Northern Neck of Virginia recorded by Alicia J. Rouverol in July and August 1991. Interviews were conducted for a 1991 exhibition, "'Because My Work is What I Do': Watermen of the Northern Neck" sponsored by the Greater Reedville Association, Reedville, Virginia. Anglo- and African American fishermen were interviewed about their family histories; fishing boats; boat repair; pound netting for herring, shad, and menhaden; crabbing; oystering; oyster diseases; fishing regulations; menhanden chantey singing; and other topics. The collection includes 72 contact sheets of black-and-white photographs of fishermen, fishing boats, nets, crab pots, peeler traps, eel pots, oyster tonging, oyster shucking, the Reedville parade, blessing of the fleet, chantey singers, and aerial photography taken by photographer, Starke Jett, for the exhibition. Manuscripts include Alicia J. Rouverol's correspondence, field notes, interview transcripts, exhibition narrative, contracts, grant application, invoices, clippings, maps, and related research materials, including student papers about Chesapeake Bay fishermen and fishermen's chanteys, and other traditions written by college students for classes taught by Charles and Nan Perdue, with other published and unpublished works about the history of the menhaden fishery, oystering, and crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay.
