Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Associated with Peanut Butter and Peanut Butter-Containing Products - CDC MMWR - Jan. 29
As of January 28, 2009, 529 persons from 43 states and one person from Canada had been reported infected with the outbreak strain. Search for Peanut Butter Product Recalls - FDA - Updated Daily
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created and posted an expanded, searchable database that will be updated as new information becomes available: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm.

Oklahoma Firm Recalls Frozen Chili Beef Products That May Contain Foreign Materials - USDA - Jan. 30
Windsor Quality Food Co., Ltd., doing business as Windsor Foods, a Tulsa, OK, establishment, is recalling approximately 676,560 pounds of frozen chili beef products that may contain foreign materials from an ingredient source.  The products were produced on Nov. 6, 2008, through Jan. 13, 2009, and were distributed to food service and limited retail establishments nationwide.

Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Journal - CDC - Feb. 2009
The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) journal provides recognition of new and re-emerging infections and understanding of factors involved in disease emergence, prevention, and elimination. It also represents the scientific communications component of CDC's efforts against the threat of emerging infections.

Public Health Preparedness: Strengthening CDC's Emergency Response – A CDC Report on Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (TPER)-Funded Activities - CDC - Jan. 2009
CDC's Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (COTPER) released its inaugural report on CDC activities in public health emergency preparedness. The report explains the key role CDC plays in preparing the public health infrastructure to respond effectively to all types of hazards, and provides an overview of the broad range of preparedness activities receiving Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (TPER) funding. The report also details how CDC is addressing challenges to achieve its overarching public health preparedness goal: People prepared for emerging health threats - people in all communities will be protected from infectious, occupational, environmental, and terrorist threats.

Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic Resistance: How Misuse of Antibiotics Could Threaten Your Health - FDA - Jan. 28
Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health concern worldwide. When a person is infected with an antibiotic-resistant bacterium, not only is treatment of that patient more difficult, but the antibiotic-resistant bacterium may spread to other people.

Travelers' Health

Marburg Case in US Traveler to Uganda - CDC - Jan. 30
CDC has recently determined that a US citizen who became ill in January 2008 contracted Marburg hemorrhagic fever after a trip to Uganda. Marburg hemorrhagic fever is caused by Marburg virus. The traveler has since recovered. No other cases have been identified in the United States at this time. There is no evidence that this traveler infected other people.

Efforts Must Be Intensified To Control Zimbabwe Cholera Outbreak - WHO - Jan. 30
Zimbabwe's cholera outbreak, one of the world's largest ever recorded, is far from being brought under control. An enhanced response is needed to urgently reverse an epidemic that has so far infected more than 60,000 people and killed more than 3,100 since August 2008.
