Hungarian Newspapers at the Library of Congress

This finding aid lists every Hungarian-language newspaper found in the collections of the Library of Congress, plus non-Hungarian language papers published within the boundaries of historical Hungary prior to 1920, and Trianon Hungary after 1920. It is the first attempt to bring together into one document information for Hungarian papers at the Library of Congress in all formats: loose issues, bound volumes, microfilm, and digital/online versions.

This finding aid also provides the permanent links (permalinks) to the corresponding records in the Library of Congress catalog, and also to those in the catalog of the National Széchényi Library (Országos Széchényi Könyvtár -- OSzK). The OSzK catalog records are included as they provide full bibliographic descriptions for the entries (including subtitle, publisher, and place of publication changes) and have been used exclusively to determine the dates of publication. Where the OSzK record differs from the LC, the OSzK record should be considered authoritative.

Holdings for paper (bound volumes) are taken primarily from the bibliography Newspapers of East Central and Southeastern Europe in the Library of Congress, edited by Robert G. Carlton (1965), the Check List of Foreign Newspapers in the Library of Congress. Supplement (unpublished; held at the circulation desk of the Newspaper and Current Periodicals Reading Room), and from a 2011 survey taken by the Library's Serial and Government Publications Division from the labels on the bound volumes, in preparation for shipping them to remote storage. Carlton provides the most detailed holdings information but is dated (1965), and therefore does not reflect changes in the paper collection since that time. The 2011 survey indicates only the inclusive date information printed on the spine or cover of the bound volumes themselves. Discrepancies between Carlton's holdings information and the current survey of the bound volumes suggest that some papers may have been discarded after they were filmed or after film was obtained. Holdings for microfilm have been determined by actual inspection of the reels, and also from the master card file of microfilm holdings located at the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room's circulation desk.

Special mention should be made of one microfilm reel, #356a, a compilation of 26 newspaper titles and other material published in Hungary during and after the Revolution, covering the period from October 23 until December 31, 1956.

All newspapers and microfilm may be requested in the Library's Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room, except where noted (i.e. MicRR indicates that the material is held in the Microform Reading Room). Bound volumes are held in remote storage and must be requested beforehand; see the Requesting Bound Newspapers from Remote Storage for more details. The online links are either to the sites of newspapers currently published or to those from the time of the 1956 revolution that have been digitized by the Elektronikus Periodika Adatbázis / Archívum (Electronic Periodical Database/Archive) at the National Széchényi Library.
