Two 10-inch tapes of ethnic and tribal music originally recorded on cylinders in Asia, Australia, Central America, East Africa, Europe, Greenland, Indonesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, New Guinea, North Africa, North America, South Africa, South America, and West Africa by various collectors. Compiled on 120 by Erich M. von Hornbostel at the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv as the Hornbostel Demonstration Collection, ca. 1911. The collection includes 3/4 linear inch of correspondence, descriptions, lists, and notes.

AFC 1986/022: Center for Applied Linguistics Collection
Fifty-nine 10-inch tapes of speech samples, linguistic interviews, oral histories, conversations, and excerpts from public speeches recorded at various locations in North America by various collectors, and compiled by the Center for Applied Linguistics for a project entitled "A Survey and Collection of American English Dialect Recordings." The collection includes fourteen linear inches of documentation, including an introduction and preface, a list of contents, content summaries, and transcripts. Collectors and interviewees vary, representing approximately 43 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Canada, and Puerto Rico. [catalog record] [online presentation]

AFS 24,348: One tape containing interviews with various residents of Bern, Georgetown, and Montpelier, Idaho, of German and Swiss ancestry. Topics include family and personal histories and various personal reminiscences. Recorded in Provo, Utah, by Darwin Hayes, 1983-85. (1 hour and 30 minutes; RWB 3897)

AFC 1981/004: Chicago Ethnic Arts Project Collection
Ninety-nine 7-inch tapes and 245 audiocassettes of a field survey of ethnic artistic expression in Chicago, including dance, foodways, instrument making, neighborhood gatherings, religious celebrations, social club meetings, textile arts, vocal and instrumental music, and wood carving. Recorded in the Chicago, Illinois as part of the Chicago Ethnic Arts Project by various collectors under the direction of Elena Bradunas, February-November 1977; under the joint sponsorship of the American Folklife Center and the Illinois Arts Council. The collection includes 269 folders of fieldnotes, logs, and photographic materials. The project was sponsored by the American Folklife Center and the Chicago Arts Council. AFS 20,547-20,548: Two audiocassettes containing an interview with Isabella Erbe, columnist for the German American newspaper Eintracht. Topics include origins of the newspaper, the interests of D.A.N.K. (German American National Congress), the Steuben Verein cultural organization, the annual Trachtenfest, Jewish German American organizations, the Landsmannschaften organization, the future of German clubs in Chicago, the lack of unity among many German-Americans, regionalism, relations between German and Austrian immigrants, German-speaking Swiss-Americans, and the attitudes towards German-Americans as a result of World War II. Eleven 7-inch tapes and six cassettes of six Neptune Plaza concerts recorded at the Library of Congress, April-September 1991. Sponsored by the American Folklife Center. The collection includes two videocassettes and thirteen and 1/2 linear inches of concert logs, concert programs, twenty black-and-white contact sheets, fliers, illustrations, three negatives, news clippings, twelve photographs, and press releases. AFC 1991/021: Paradise Valley Folklife Project Collection
Multi-format collection documenting the history and culture of the ranching community in Paradise Valley, Nevada. A team of fieldworkers documented the distinct ethnic groups in the area (Apache, Anglo, Basque, Chinese, German, Italian and Northern Paiute); the history of the region, including archaeological remains of a Chinese community, foodways, oral tradition. Vernacular architecture, the annual "cycle of work," and ranch crafts and horse gear of the valley. Compiled 1978-1982.

AFS 22,878-22,879: Two tapes containing an interview with Felix Scott discussing Italian dialects, Swiss-Italian dialect, and family history; Swiss in Winnemucca; social problems in Winnemucca; and Mrs. Scott’s family history. AFC 1991/026: "Down Home Dairyland" / Wisconsin Folk Museum Collection
Seven cassettes of part II of the radio series "Downhome Dairyland" hosted and produced by Jim Leary and Richard March, presented by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Folk Museum, and broadcast weekly March 4─May 27, 1990. The collection includes eight pages of a brochure, correspondence, datasheets, and an inventory.

Lecture based on Bart Plantenga's book, Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo. He discusses European, African, and Native American vocal styles, with demonstrations of yodeling by Randy Erwin, a Czech-Tex yodeler, and by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer.
