Hurricane Sandy Impact

We are devastated by the impact that Hurricane Sandy had on families, north and south shore alike, on Long Island. As you know, we have been documenting the maritime culture of our region, and have sought to educate the public about the cultural heritage and traditions of bay house owners, fishermen and baymen, boat builders and boat yard owners, and decoy carvers and duck hunters.

Sadly, many of the bay houses were destroyed, damaged, or swept away to different parts of the bay. Baymen can no longer work in the western bays because of the sewage treatment plants’ failure. And, of course, thousands of families along the south shore are displaced due to the destruction of their homes. We wish all of you the strength needed to cope with this calamity.
