    •  NARA-Riverside, California Internship My Internship here at NARA-Riverside flew bye, what an exciting and informative 10-week period, a “birds-eye-view” into the world of the Archivist. In my spare time, I became a researcher and utilized NARA’s vast Navajo records to research my father’s ancestry, and WWII records on the USMC Navajo Code Talkers recruitment, which my father was one of the Original 29. This picture is taken at Wingate, NM, the USMC swearing in ceremony. My project at NARA included processing records (holding maintenance and preservation), an inventory shelf read of assets and compiled container lists using MS Word, Excel and Access to complete this Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Navajo Area Office, Indian Trust Accounting Division (ITA) project. I had time the last week to merger together an existing series with other records found in the BIA inventory matching this asset series. Also a “Thank You” to The Washington Center which this Post-Graduate Internship was made possible (www.twc.edu), and to NARA’s Gwen Granados, Director for selecting me to be a part of their BIA Navajo project. I began my experience with the National Archives during my senior year in college as an intern for the Center for Legislative Archives. I had a great experience with the Center and was definitely looking to continue my work with them while attending graduate school. After being accepted into the Public History program at American University, I secured a Student Temporary position (STEP) with the Center. Eight months later I was converted to a Student Career (SCEP) position. Once I finished graduate school I was converted to a permanent position, and have been here ever since. July marked by fourth anniversary as a NARA employee!

    • I'm on week 9 out of 10 at NARA. I have been enjoying the experience. I've learned that the federal government has some problems, but I still believe in it. I had some moments where I was very disappointed, but I see that things can still work out for the best if I choose to work in the federal government. I think the GOV just needs to keep its manner of thought fresh, so that it does not stagnate with redundancies or inaction.

    • I interned with NARA's Office Presidential Libraries in College Park, MD during my first semester of library school at the University of Maryland in the Fall of 2010. I did some initial research on revising the web content and layout. I learned that on a whole NARA is doing some pretty interesting work around outreach and education with the public as well as using social media to connect with new audiences. This knowledge and exposure helped me land my next job in an archives doing digital outreach and instruction. Though I didn't stay too long at NARA, my supervisor was a sweetheart and very supportive of my ideas and my coworkers were helpful. There seemed to be a lot of great opportunities for students/interns.
