AFC 1942/007: Seamus Doyle South American Recordings
Fifty-three 12-inch discs of music recorded in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, by Seamus Doyle, July-September 1941, while Doyle was on tour with the Kirstein American Ballet Group. The collection includes Doyle's 6-page journal entitled "Report on the Collection of Folk Music in South America" and a detailed song list with performers, titles, genres, recording dates, and locations. AFC 1943/001: Discoteca Pública Municipal de São Paulo Collection
Two hundred fifteen 10-, 12-, and 16-inch sound discs, 359 black-and-white photoprints, and one film reel documenting songs, instruments, and dances recorded in the states of Maranhão, Para, Paraiba, Pernambuco, and São Paulo, 1937-38. Acquired from the Discoteca Pública Municipal of São Paulo in an exchange project initiated by the U.S. Department of State. The recordings are accompanied by extensive notes in Portuguese. AFC 1943/015: Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo and E. Nogueira França Recordings from Goiânia, Brazil
Eighteen 12-inch discs of Brazilian folks songs and folk dances, a folk play, and interviews recorded in Goyania, Goyaz, Brazil, by Luiz Heitor Correa de Azevedo and E. Nogueira Franca June 24-27, 1942. The collection includes one box of logs and correspondence, 1941-1953. Also included is Azevedo's detailed course outline, "Classe de Folclore Nacional, Escola Nacional de Música," on Brazilian folk music and folklore, including indigenous music, Afro-Brazilian music and dance; and popular music, in Portuguese (69 p., photocopy). AFC 1945/008: Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo and E. Nogueira França Recordings from Ceará, Brazil
Seventy-five 12-inch discs of Brazilian folk songs, improvisations, folk dances, and folk plays (Bois do Reis, Fandango, Congo, Cana-Verde), romances, religious songs, desafios, louvaçãos, cocos, Xangô tunes, and other songs recorded in several locations in Ceará, Brazil, by Luiz Heitor Correa de Azevedo and E. Nogueira Franca, January and February, 1943. One disc, AFS 7324, was recorded at Manga, Minas Gerais, while they were enroute to Ceará. The collection includes logs and trip itinerary. Ninety-seven 12-inch discs of folk songs of Brazil recorded in Minas Gerais, Brazil, by Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo and E. Silva Novo, January and February 1944. Genres include folksongs, popular songs, dance music, guitar music, brass band music, religious chant, interviews, group singing, toasts and songs performed at a dinner; duets, children's game songs, Christmas begging songs, work songs of stone-cutters and mine workers, street cries, and other music of Minas Gerais, Brazil. AFC 1970/002: Literatura de Cordel Brazilian Chapbook Collection
More than 8380 16x11cm chapbooks collected by the Library of Congress Office in Brazil. In the markets of northeast Brazil, where literatura de cordel is most popular, local poets hang their little four by 6 1/2-inch chapbooks from strings, hence the name literatura de cordel, which literally means "stories on a string." The poets, known as cordelistas, then entertain the market crowd by reciting their narrative poems about current events, morality, or the adventures of a famous folk hero. Chapbooks are illustrated by woodcut prints, photographs, and other cover art. Approximately 300 chapbooks are added to this collection each year. The collection includes 13 7-inch tapes of romances and other songs recorded by Sol Biderman in northeastern Brazil, ca. 1968-70, 11 prints, 1 by E. Rivaldo, 1995, and 10 by José Francisco Borges, artist and cordel poet, signed and dated 1997 and 1998. (includes AFS 14,178-14,190) (LWO 6077) [catalog record]

AFC 1971/025: Ralph Cole Waddey Recordings of Afro-Brazilian Music
One 7-inch tape of capoeira music, with birimbau, agogô, pandeira, and chorus (45 min.) and candomblé music (82 min.) recorded by Ralph Cole Waddey in Salvador, Brazil on two dates in 1966. AFS 22,968-23,018: William Henry Crocker / Canela (Ramkokamekra) Indian Collection
Fifty-one 10-inch tapes of songs and group dance chants, some with gourd rattle accompaniment, by the Ramkokamerkra group of the Canela Indians of the Amazon Basin of South America. Recorded in Brazil by William Henry Crocker of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, September 1978-October 1979.

Ten wire spools of regional folksongs of Espirito Santo, Brazil. Recorded on an unknown date by Guilherme Santos Neves.

AFC 1996/014: Chiraj Productions / Verde Amarelo Band Cassette
One audiocassette of a demonstration tape made by two members of the Verde Amarelo Band from Brazil. The band plays jazz-influenced sambas, traditional and contemporary tunes. Instruments include guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards, mandolin, and saxophones.

AFC 1999/033: Brazilian Woodcut Prints Collection
Eleven large Brazilian woodcut prints, 10 by J. Borges (José Francisco Borges), signed and dated 1997 and 1998; and one by Erivaldo (Erivaldo Silva), 1995. The J. Borges prints were donated to the Library of Congress as a "Gift to the Nation" during the Library of Congress Bicentennial by Ambassador of Brazil, Rubens Barbosa, November 16. 1999. AFC 2005/008: Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo Collection on Latin American Folklore
Publications pertaining to Latin American folklore from the library of Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo, Brazilian folklorist and musicologist. The collection includes monographs, articles, bibliographies, conference proceedings, and other publications about folk music, musical instruments, popular music, dance, folklore, food traditions, proverbs, children's folklore, traditional and folk medicine, local religious celebrations (including Christmas, Epiphany, and Easter) and devotions to various saints, Cuban santeria, Afro-Brazilian traditions, and anthropological studies of indigenous people of Brazil, among other topics. Most publications are about Brazil but some are about folk culture in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela. [catalog record]

AFC 2006/019: Sol Biderman Collection
The collection comprises Biderman's writings, poetry, research materials, and primary sources for his studies of folk literature including 326 Brazilian chapbooks published between 1958 and 2003, with comparative materials from other countries, including Mexico and Italy. Includes 3 sound recordings, some of which were taped in Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, and Ceara in 1967-1968, of performances of Brazilian poetry and song. Artifacts in the collection include wooden boxes by Guilherme de Faria (a.k.a. Alma Welt); a series of fourteen woodblocks depicting the crucifixion of Christ by João Antonio de Barros; woodblock prints from the Via Sacra series by Jose Ćosta Leite; and selected photographs from Inocencio da Costa Niquel's (Mestre Noza) woodblock Via Sacra series, plus posters advertising Biderman's plays. AFC 2007/025: Henrique Vieira Leite Collection of Brazilian Literatura de Cordel
Ten literatura de cordel chapbooks (8 p. each) of poetry on contemporary events by author Henrique Vieira Leite, with woodcut cover illustrations signed Erivaldo (Erivaldo Silva); most are dated 2002 to 2007, a few are undated. Several chapbooks have an advertisement inserted inside the front cover. The publishers are Preserve a Natureza e a Cultura Popular Brasileira, or Academia Brasileira de Literatura de Cordel.
